Chapter 2

Oliver scooped up the last morsel of food and leaned back heavily in his chair.

“Wow,” he breathed.  “I know I said your amazing cooking was down to my DNA, but even I can’t take credit for this.”

Chloe grinned, her cheeks reddening with pride.  “I knew I’d done a good job when you asked for seconds.”

“The only thing stopping me from asking for thirds is my last remaining sliver of self-control,” he replied with a burp.  “Plus, with all the cheese I’ve put away, I don’t want to have nightmares.”  He reached for her hand and kissed it warmly.  “That was a lovely dinner, Chloe.  Thank you.”

“I’m glad you liked it,” she said, wincing slightly as she stood.

Oliver frowned.  “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine; just a Braxton Hicks,” she said dismissively.

“You’ve been having a lot of false contractions lately,” he observed.

“It’s just practice for the big day,” she replied with a smile.  “Listen, you go watch some TV whilst I stick these in the dishwasher.”

“I can do that for you.”

“Nah, I’m fine.  Besides, you look like you can barely move after that meal.”

He chuckled and headed for the den.  “Well-spotted.”

Five months ago

“Foetal heartbeat is strong, regular; cephalic and limb measurements are all age-appropriate…”

Lola droned on with the technical specifications of the sonogram, but Oliver and Chloe barely heard her.  Their hands were tightly clasped, fingers interlinked as they stared at the image of the curled up child in Chloe’s womb, the tiny thumb clearly in its mouth.

They were having a baby.  And even though they’d already seen ultrasound images from the first scan at 12 weeks, and Chloe had been feeling stirrings for a while now, it was still so surreal to see that the odd-shaped kidney bean from 8 weeks ago was now a fully formed, tiny, thumb-sucking human being.

“I can see the sex of the baby, if you’d like to know,” Lola offered as she passed the sonogram wand over Chloe’s lightly-swollen belly.

Chloe and Oliver nodded and spoke in unison.  “We want to know.”  After losing their first child without ever getting the chance to see him or her, it was the first thing they’d agreed on once they’d discovered Chloe was pregnant once again.

Lola smiled.  “Alrighty, then.  Who had dibs on a boy?”

“I did, I did!” Chloe shrieked excitedly.

“Well, get ready to pay the piper, honey, because this li’l here peanut is a girl.”

Yes!” Oliver cheered with a celebratory fist-pump.  “I knew it, I knew it!  A girl!  We’re having a little girl!”  He stilled and stared at the curled up infant on the screen, and his eyes widened in wonder.  “We’re having a little girl,” he whispered reverently.  “That’s my daughter. Our daughter.”

“A girl,” Chloe said, her voice wobbly.  She sniffed, and Oliver leaned over her and stroked her hair.

“Hey,” he soothed.  “You’re not disappointed, are you?”

“What? No!” she said with a shaky laugh.  “I’m thrilled and excited and terrified all at the same time.  A girl…wow!”

“She’ll be blonde, obviously,” Oliver said.  “I wonder what colour her eyes will be, though… and if she’ll inherit your innate caution or my sense of adventure.”

“Given the way she’s been doing loop-the-loops this past month, I think it’s a safe bet to say she’s definitely taken after you on that front,” she replied wryly.

“She’s already so beautiful,” he whispered in awe.  Chloe smiled as he reached out to the screen and brushed a finger along the tiny cheek.

Lola grinned and shook her head as she wrote her notes.  “And it begins.  Look at him, totally smitten.  Mark my words, Chloe, he’s going to give her everything she ever asks for.”

“And then some,” he declared proudly.

“Hey!  This is how moms turn into the Bad Cop parents with their daughters!” Chloe complained, her eyes twinkling.  “We will discipline her and reward her as a unit.  Agreed?”

“Fine,” he grumbled.  “But I’m getting her that cute, fluffy, monogrammed lime-green blankie this very afternoon.  That is absolutely non-negotiable.”

“Monogrammed?” Chloe echoed.  “We haven’t even chosen her names yet!”

He shrugged.  “So it’ll say Daddy’s Girl, then.  Or Little Queen.  Or both.”  He grinned.  “I like both.”

Chloe rolled her eyes and nodded.  “I’ll let you have that, as long as you get something for her mother while you’re at it.”

“It’s a deal.”  He leaned down and kissed her, his eyes sparkling with pure joy and happiness.  “I love you so much, Chloe.  Thank you for not letting me give up on this.”

She smiled and rubbed her nose gently against his.  “I knew you’d find your way back.”

“If you two are quite done canoodling on my couch, I can get a video of the sonogram and some pictures you might like to give to friends and family,” Lola interrupted with a smile.

“Oh, goody!” Chloe squealed.  “Lois would love one of these, for sure.  Two, even.  Heck, she’d probably try and swipe the video if we gave her half a chance!”

Oliver paused.  “What do we need to do for the next twenty weeks to give our daughter the best possible chance?” he asked the doctor.  Chloe could sense the fear creeping in, the worry that he might once again not get the chance to hold his child in his arms.

“Exactly what you’ve been doing for the first twenty weeks,” Lola replied as she wiped the gel off Chloe’s belly with a napkin.  “Eat healthy, light exercise, and don’t get unnecessarily stressed.”

“I won’t,” Chloe promised.

“That last one was actually for you, Oliver,” Lola pointed out.  “I know what happened the last time, but there is no need to worry about the health of this baby.  She’s absolutely fine, and you tying yourself in knots is not going to help either her or Chloe.  Stay strong, stay positive, stay happy.  And most of all: enjoy this.  It’s a wonderful time in your life, and it goes by quicker than you think.”

***

Present Day

He was dreaming of windmills.

It was a sunny day, and he was in the middle of a cornfield, sitting on the top of a large windmill which had four blades made of four different cheeses.

Oliver watched, fascinated, as the blades turned; sometimes slowly, at other times picking up speed so rapidly that they whooshed loudly as they went past his head.  Whoosh…whoosh…whoosh…whoosh…whoosh…whoosh… then it died down, and the blades returned to their quiet, slow rotation.

On and on it went, fast and slow, until the silence between the whooshes got shorter and shorter, and there was a loud, creaky groan from the centre of the windmill.  The sudden change in pattern made his eyelids flicker open and he blinked in the darkness, his eyes gradually adjusting to the low levels of light.

Whoosh…whoosh…whoosh…

He blinked again, halfway convinced he was still dreaming until his eyes picked out the silhouette of his wife in the rocking chair in the corner of the room.  Towards the end of her pregnancy, she sometimes found it difficult sleeping at a 180-degree angle, and the rocking chair was both recommended by and inherited from one of Oliver’s colleagues who’d used it for all three of her babies.

The chair creaked softly as Chloe rocked in it, and Oliver frowned as he realised that the whooshing appeared to be coming from her…as did the groan that followed almost immediately.

“Chloe?” he called.  Quickly he reached for the bedside lamp and switched it on, his eyes widening as he saw her clutching her belly with a grimace on her face.

“Hey,” she said breathlessly.  “You’re up.”

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, go back to sleep.”

He frowned.  “Are you sure?  You don’t look too comfortable.  Is it another Braxton Hicks?”

She glanced away guiltily.  “Ah…no.”

“Then what is – oh, God.”  He paled.  “Oh, God.  Are you in labour?!”

She smiled sheepishly.  “Umm… you could say that, yeah.”

I can't believe you left it there! Oh, Chloe. When you're in labor, get thee to a damn hospital! Silly girl. This one is so joyous I just love it. They deserve it after the tragedy they endured. Oliver will no doubt be spoiling this child rotten. Thanks for the quick update! :)

It's so randomly hilarious that Ollie dreams of cheese after he eats cheese!

“She’s already so beautiful,” he whispered in awe. Chloe smiled as he reached out to the screen and brushed a finger along the tiny cheek.

Lola grinned and shook her head as she wrote her notes. “And it begins. Look at him, totally smitten."
Awww Ollie.

Did Chloe really tell Ollie to go back to sleep while she was in labor?! LoL! I think her auto response is to tell Ollie not to worry and she's been saying it so much that she forgot to change her response when it came to the real deal! Can't wait for the next chapter!
