Chapter 9
Oh, no. No.
“Clark!” Lex cried, falling to his knees beside him. “Oh, God…”
Fear gripped him as blood seeped from the edges of the buried blade, creating a rapidly spreading crimson stain all over the floor.
“No,” Lex moaned, cradling Clark to himself. “No, I can’t lose you, not now…”
“Lex,” he heard Chloe say urgently. “You need to take the knife out, Lex-”
He shook his head vehemently. “I can’t, he’ll bleed out-”
“The blue kryptonite’s stripped him of his abilities, so he’s human right now,” Chloe explained in a rush. “His powers should return once the threat is removed, but if you don’t take out the blade, he’ll die.”
Lex could barely see through the tears coursing down his face, and he was still torn between what the right decision was; but there was no time to deliberate. Clark had lost consciousness as well as a whole lot of blood; his skin was a sickly shade of blue, and his breathing already very shallow.
“Clark,” he whispered. “I love you. No matter what happens, know that I always loved you.”
“Lex,” Chloe said softly. “You’re running out of time.”
Lex nodded. He took a deep breath, and then yanked out the knife.
Warm blood gushed out from the wound, and Lex quickly placed the heel of his hand over the gaping hole to stem the flow of the blood. Chloe pressed her hand over his, providing additional pressure, but despite the assist, Clark continued to bleed rapidly, his blood seeping out from between their joined fingers.
“It’s not working,” Lex said in alarm. “Chloe, it’s not working…”
Chloe didn’t answer. Her eyes were closed in concentration and just as her brow furrowed in a small frown, a golden glow emanated from beneath her palm.
Lex trembled as he felt his own hand begin to tingle. He watched in confounded amazement as the lacerated skin and tissues on Clark’s chest slowly reconnected and reformed itself into brand new, unbroken skin.
“You’re healing him,” Lex said, stunned.
“I think…we’re healing him, Lex,” she said breathlessly, her eyes opening in surprise.

The luminescence glowed brightly for several seconds before gradually abating. Chloe cautiously lifted her hands, and both of them glanced at each other and then at Clark’s injury - which had healed completely.
Oliver, who had been observing them with a hopeful expression, crouched down to Clark’s side and placed two fingers against his neck.
“He’s alive,” he said with a relieved smile. “Pulse is weak and thready, but he’s definitely out of danger. He’s going to be fine.”
“Thank God,” Lex said shakily, pulling the still unconscious Clark into his lap and wrapping his arms around him. “I was so scared I’d lost you…”
Chloe and Oliver exchanged a knowing look. “Is everyone else okay?” she asked.
Oliver nodded. “A couple of kicks and scratches and a few broken ribs, but no life-threatening injuries.”
“You go see to them, then,” she suggested. “Lex and I will stay with Clark and get him back to Black Creek.”
“What about you?” Oliver asked softly. “You okay?”
She gave him a warm smile. “I’m fine, Ollie. You go do what you do best; lead.”
Oliver rose and gathered both his and Lex’s teams together and supervised the arduous task of getting everybody back to base. Shortly afterwards a Queen Industries HeliJet arrived and airlifted Lex, Clark and Chloe to safety.
“I don’t understand,” Chloe said as they flew towards Montana. “How did I heal him? My powers don’t work on Clark.”
Lex smiled, still staring in wonder at Clark’s hithero-injured chest. “Evidently they do.”
She shook her head. “They didn’t the last time I tried to heal him; he died in my arms,” she replied with a shudder. “And why didn’t I die this time? I always suffer intense pain and shut down completely after healing life-threatening injuries. I’m not complaining, just…curious.”
“I guess we’ll have more answers once we’re on the ground,” Lex said, stroking Clark’s hair. He could feel Chloe’s inquiring gaze on him but he didn’t care what she might be thinking. All that mattered to him was Clark, and that he was alive and well.

“You were right,” Lex said to Chloe as he walked into the room where she was sitting, keeping a vigil over the recovering Clark. “We healed him, together.”
Chloe’s eyes widened in surprise, and she glanced at her sleeping best friend. He was still unconscious but breathing properly and unassisted, his chest rising and falling normally as his complexion gradually returned to its usual healthy shade.
Lex handed Chloe a cup of coffee which she accepted gratefully, and they both sat at Clark’s bedside, watching him anxiously.
“What made the difference?” she asked, taking a sip from her mug.
“My accelerated white blood cell count,” he answered. “I’m a meteor freak too, Chloe.”
Her eyes widened. “Wow. I had my suspicions, and I always knew you healed quickly, but I never actually thought that you…” she trailed off.
He smiled. “My meteor mutation was pretty tame but it’s developed, much like yours has,” he explained. “I’ve had more than my fair share of life-threatening injuries, and every time I healed, the kryptonite in my cells acted like a virus and grew more resistant to destruction, making my cells stronger with every regeneration.
“As you now know, I was stuck under a ton of ice and snow for over a year,” he continued. “My body had to work overtime to carry out the extensive repair, and I guess when it was done…”
“Your self-healing abilities had expanded exponentially,” she mused. “I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re pretty much immortal now.”
At her words, he lowered his gaze and looked grim. “I’ve been wondering about that, too, and worrying about what it might mean,” he admitted. “How will it play out? Will I stay looking like this, will I age as normal …what?”
“Who knows?” she replied, finishing her coffee and putting her cup down. “For what it’s worth, Lex, if you are immortal then you’re in good company.”
He smiled, his gaze on the sleeping form in the bed. “Clark?”
“And maybe me,” she confessed quietly. “I’m not sure yet, but…well, I’ve died about three times, and each time I’ve come back to life with an added spring in my step.”
“I can do some tests on your blood if you want to be sure. With your permission, of course,” he added.
Chloe smiled. “Of course.”
The sat quietly for a while, each lost in their own thoughts about the unusual future that might lie ahead of them.
“You were explaining how our combined abilities brought Clark back from the brink,” she reminded him.
“It all goes back to my trip to Detroit, and gunshot wound to the head I picked up as a souvenir,” he said. “You healed me, didn’t you?”
She regarded him warily. “You knew about that?”
“I knew about a lot of things, Chloe, I was just waiting for you and Clark to trust me with them,” he said wryly. “Fact is, I knew the details of your abilities long before they ever kicked in. My father spun some yarn about that miracle cure he’d kept for himself, but I knew he was lying.”
“So you did experiment on me,” she accused.
“He gave her a sheepish smile. “Should I apologise for that now, or later?”
She sighed and rolled her eyes. “Later. How did my healing you enable my ability to heal Clark?”
“When you healed me, I was connected to Clark,” he explained. “The three of us were all intrinsically linked at that moment, and the transfer of healing energy that flowed from you to me also went through him.”
“…and your self-healing abilities must have found their way into my bloodstream and Clark’s by the simple process of osmosis,” she reasoned. “Which explains why I didn’t ‘die’ this time. You healed me.”
“Exactly,” he confirmed.
“But it doesn’t explain why I couldn’t heal Clark the last time he died,” she argued. “After all, it was after the tripartite connection, so theoretically it should have worked.”
Lex sighed. “I’ll explain it in a way you’ll understand,” he said, his tone patronising. “After the three-way healing, your body pretty much downloaded some ‘upgrades’ from me…” he smirked as her eyes narrowed in a frosty glare – “…and needed to shut down and reboot before those systems became operational.”
She thought hard. “So, in placing both our hands over Clark’s injury, you basically gave me the jump-lead I needed to activate my new and improved abilities.”
“I knew you’d understand it better in computer terms,” he chuckled. “Congratulations Chloe - your abilities have finally stopped hating you.”
She smiled, and then her expression turned serious and she remained silent for several minutes.
“What about you, Lex?” she eventually asked.
He frowned. “What about me?”
“Have you finally stopped hating me?”
