Egads. Has it actually been THREE MONTHS since I updated this?!? :-O
I can't thank you enough for your patience, it's been a very busy three months, I assure you. And the good news is the next two chapters are written; all they need is editing. The longer it takes, the longer the story gets, which can only be a bonus. ;-)
So enough of my rabbitting on, and enjoy the chapter. My sincere apologies that it's coming so late.
PS:I'm still on the hunt for a banner for this one, so I'd welcome all takers! :-)
Scratch that. I got a gift of a banner from the awesome
ctbn60, and what a awesome banner it is!!! Thank you, Carol! *squees* :-)

Chapter 6
Lex knew the second Clark left his side.
He was still asleep, but there was a sudden…vacuum, a clear presence lost. It was clear as day what was going on: Clark was, predictably, doing a runner.
Lex smiled to himself and lay in the darkened room, waiting until Clark had finished stealthily dressing and was heading towards the exit before he spoke.
“Why am I not surprised to see you sneaking off?” he said wryly, switching on the beside lamp and startling his fleeing companion just as his hand was on the doorknob.
Clark flushed guiltily and quickly snatched his hand back. “I wasn’t sneaking off, I was just…just…” he trailed off, clearly looking for alternative words to describe his flight.
“…sneaking off,” Lex finished. “You always were a bad liar, Clark. But hey; there’s no need for stealth. You’re free to leave, I’m not stopping you.”
Clark blinked. “You’re – you’re not?”
Lex shook his head. “Not at all. I mean, it’s not like we really mean anything more to each other than the occasional fuck, right? No doubt I’ll find you lurking on rooftops if I’ve got an itch that needs scratching.”
“You don’t really mean that. I know you don’t.”
“Oh, really?” Lex challenged. “How?”
Clark smiled. “Because you love me, Lex.”
On hearing the ‘L’ word, Lex stiffened. “I don’t love anyone but myself.”
“That’s not what you said last night,” Clark said smoothly.
“Are you saying I told you I loved you?” Lex asked with narrowed eyes.
Clark nodded. “Loud and clear.”
Lex scowled. “Then you’re lying. I’d have remembered saying something like that.”
“You were falling asleep,” Clark said softly. “I kissed you, on the top of your head, and…and you put your arms around me and said that you loved me.”
“I didn’t-”
“…and I said it back to you.”
So he hadn’t imagined that; the soft caress on top of his words, and the gently spoken words ‘I love you too, Lex,’ that were floating around in his subconscious hadn’t been wishful thinking. It had been real.
Clark loved him.
His eyes danced with elation at the news, and then quickly narrowed in a harsh glare. “If that’s true, then why were you sneaking off?”
Clark sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “It’s complicated, Lex. It’s a lot for me to get my head around. I need to think-”
“What the hell is there to think about?” he asked, his voice rising. “We love each other, End of Story.”
“I know how I feel about you, and I’ve accepted it, but…” he paused. “Lex, I can’t just ignore all the terrible things you’ve done-”
“Oh, give me a break!” he snapped, throwing off the covers and getting out of bed. “So we’re back here again, huh? How many times do I have to tell you, Clark? I am not a monster!”
Clark stared at his groin and swallowed hard before dragging his eyes upward and forcing his brain back on topic.
“You killed, people, Lex!” he shouted. “Am I supposed to forget all that because I’m in love with you?”
“And who are all these so-called people that I murdered, huh?”
“All those meteor freaks you chipped, remember?” Clark said, looking pained. “And all the other horrible things you’ve done? You made Lana believe she was pregnant so she would marry you! You experimented on Chloe and her Mom-”
Lex held up a hand, stopping him midstream.
“Lana was digging up your secret, and I had to stop her somehow,” he replied, staring into his eyes. “You two were on the outs, and I had no idea what was going through her head. I admit, I experimented on Chloe, her Mom and numerous other meteor-infected people, but only after I had carried out the exact same tests on myself.”
“You…you tested yourself?” Clark asked, his eyes wide.
“Surprised?” Lex said wryly. “I am a meteor freak, after all. And it wouldn’t be the first time.”
Clark had to admit, Lex was probably telling the truth there. When the Smallville had been infected with the hallucinogen gas that had given people heart attacks from living out their worst fears, Lex had injected the untested and potentially dangerous antidote into his own arm first to be sure it was safe. Only after he’d made a full recovery had he circulated to the general public.
Still…
“And the meteor freaks you killed?” he said softly. “Daniel Kim and the others that were chipped, the ones you used Tobias Rice to find?”
Lex sighed. “All alive and well in a secret facility,” he admitted. “I just made it look like they were all dead, but they’re not.”
“Why?” Clark whispered. “Why would you do something like that?”
“You have to understand, Clark, I had no way of knowing how dangerous they were or had the potential to be,” he explained. “All I wanted to do was knock them out, test them and catalogue their abilities; see what they could do and how we might be able to channel their abilities to the best use possible. As I said before, I’d carried out the entire procedure on myself, and knew it was safe. And they were all to be released back home with a memory wipe and a chip to keep tabs on them.
But then the project was compromised, and I had to make a difficult decision.”
“And you’re sure that decision wasn’t mass homicide?”
Lex smiled. “Of course not. I’m not stupid.”
“You say they’re all alive,” Clark said sternly. “Where are they?”
“Black Creek, Montana.”
“The same facility where you held Chloe against her will?” he said, his jaw flinching. “I saw that place, Lex. It didn’t look like a holiday camp to me.”
“I promise you, they’re all well taken care of-”
“Like Chloe was?” he roared. “She wanted to leave, but they wouldn’t let her. I almost got killed busting her outta there! Forget almost, I did get killed!”
“That wasn’t my fault, Clark,” he said. “Regan was in charge at the time, and he started running the place like a concentration camp. In case you’ve forgotten, I was stuck under a thick sheet of compacted ice at the time?”
Clark swallowed and nodded.
“He was only in charge for a month, and his methods stopped the second Tess took the reins and put things back to the way they were,” he said. “Trust me, everyone we took to the facility is fine. They’re in good hands.”
Clark still wasn’t fully convinced. “So they get three meals a day and a comfy bed at night, but so do prisoners, Lex!” he argued. “Don’t you think they have the right to choose how they want to live their lives?”
Lex shook his head. “Not when the entire planet is at risk,” he said grimly. “There’s a threat coming, Clark; something just as bad if not worse than Doomsday.”
Clark frowned. “A threat?”
“To global freedom.”
Clark gave an exasperated sigh. “Great. Just what I need. And who or what is it this time?”
Lex swallowed. “Zod.”
