Chapter 2

The girls splashed about happily in their bubble bath.  Chloe took charge of Sloane while Oliver managed with Skye, who was delightfully wriggly.

He watched with a lump in his throat as Chloe washed Sloane’s hair.  She took special care, gently tilting the child’s head back as she worked the conditioning shampoo through the dark curls.

How could she possibly believe that she didn’t want this for herself?   He could see the longing in her eyes for an addition to their family, a yearning that she was she was seriously struggling to ignore.

“Make sure you keep the shampoo out of her eyes,” Chloe advised.

He gave her a sly grin.  “Hey, I know what to do.  I washed your hair, remember?”

She blushed and smiled.  “Yes, but I wasn’t wriggling like an eel at the time,” she pointed out, leaning back to avoid a large splash from Skye.

Oliver wasn’t so lucky.  “Good point,” he agreed, staring down at the large bubbles now adorning his shirt.  Skye giggled and sloshed him again, getting more lather on his face and hair.

Chloe laughed and shook her head.  “Okay, hand her over.  You take Sloane.”

***

An hour later, after a bath and a bedtime story, they kissed the girls goodnight and made their way back down the hall.

“What a day, huh?” Chloe said, smiling up at him.  “Tiring… but a lot of fun.”

He nodded.  “Agreed.  Sloane’s taken a real shine to you; she never left your side the whole time.”

Chloe smiled.  “She’s definitely the quieter of the two, but don’t be fooled; she’s very observant, taking everything in and learning as she goes along.”  She paused, a wistful expression on her face.  “She reminds me a lot of myself when I was a child.”

Oliver took a deep breath.  “Can you imagine having that kind of fun every day, in our own home?”

Chloe frowned.  “I know the girls are a handful, but I don’t think Joel and Molly will hand them over to us indefinitely—”

“You know what I mean, Chloe.”

She stiffened.  “This again?”

“I know we’ve skirted the issue a number of times, but we’ve never really had a serious discussion about starting a family.”

“That’s because you already know how I feel about this, Oliver.”

“I know that feelings can change,” he said earnestly.  “You and I are a prime example of that, having had feelings for other people for years before eventually falling for each other.”

She softened, a smile briefly flitting across her face.  “That’s true… but it doesn’t mean I’ve changed my stance on everything.”

“I’m only talking about this one thing,” he replied quickly.  This was the first time in their marriage that he’d gotten her to respond to more than two sentences on the subject of children, and he was determined to keep her talking for as long as possible.

He took her hands and faced her.  “Just… close your eyes for a second and picture it, if you will.  A family portrait: you, me, and a beautiful son or daughter with a chin dimple and blonde hair.  Isn’t it beautiful?”

He saw a smile beginning to form at the corner of her lips, and felt encouraged.  “It is, isn’t it?” he went on.  “Can you imagine us as parents?”

Her eyes flicked open.  “Nope.”

He sighed in exasperation.  “Chloe, you love kids, you’re so good with them!”

“Only because I get to hand them back to their parents at the end of the day,” she replied diffidently.

“But you had fun today, you said so yourself!” he argued.

She shrugged.  “Hey, I didn’t say it was that much fun.”

He took a deep breath and forced himself to remain calm.  “Will you at least think about it?”

“Not today.”  She let go of his hands and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.  “Not until I’ve fully perused Molly’s extensive DVD collection.  So — what are we watching?  I’m thinking Statham, Ryan Reynolds… anything with some hard action.”

She disappeared down the corridor towards the den.  There it was; that deflection again, he thought with a touch of irritation.  Well, he wasn’t going to be put off so easily.

He followed her into the den and watched as she browsed through the DVDs on the shelf, making a shortlist of all the action movies present.

“One of the Die Hard films, or something from the Fast and Furious tank?” she asked, holding up two discs for his approval.

“You know what?  You choose,” he offered.  “I need to use the bathroom, anyway.  Won’t be long…”

“Okay.”  She returned to sorting the DVDs, and he walked back down the hall towards the bathroom.  As soon as he was inside, he locked the door and lifted her pilfered cell phone out of his pocket.

He knew her password; she’d never told him, and he’d never asked, but he’d been around her enough times to figure it out.  Quickly he unlocked the screen and scrolled through her calendar until he got to the entry he was looking for.

He whistled softly.  Her foolproof contraceptive was due to run out in two weeks; fortunately she didn’t seem to have an appointment scheduled for a replacement.  Which was just as well; waiting for two weeks would be bad enough, but having to wait another three years would be absolute torture.

He stared hard at the data on the screen, tapping his finger on it thoughtfully.  Chloe would kill him if she knew what he was about to do.  She’d been very vocal about her reluctant to have children, and the reasons behind her decision, which was why she’d done everything possible to prevent that from happening.

But that was before she’d met him.  And he also remembered her saying that if she happened to fall pregnant, she’d keep the baby with no hesitation.  That fact, coupled with the poignant look of longing on her face when she’d bathed the twins and put them to bed, gave Oliver Queen the final nudge to put his plan into action.

He took a deep breath and pressed the delete button, and the reminder disappeared from the screen.

***

“Hey,” she greeted as he returned to the living room.  “Okay, I’ve narrowed it down to these three…”

He put on an interested face as she prattled on, and stealthily dropped her cell phone back in her bag before continuing his slow walk towards her.

“…so what do you think?  What are we watching?” she asked as he got close.

Oliver rested his hands on her waist, spun her round, and gathered her into his arms in one fluid move.  “What do you say we skip the movie?” he whispered lightly into her ear.

“Oliver!” she squealed, and he chuckled.  “It’s movie night, remember?”

“I remember you saying wanted some hard action.”  He rested his hands on her bottom and ground his hips against her, and her pupils dilated with desire and need.  “I have all the hard action you need right here.”

“Mr Queen, you have swayed me with your inimitable logic,” she whispered breathlessly.  Her hand snaked down between them and closed around the bulge in his pants.  “Among other things, of course.”

Yikes. This actually makes me really uncomfortable. I get that Chloe actually does want a baby, and she is just scared- but tricking her into getting pregnant is pretty awful.

Agreed. Ollie....so not cool, dude. That's kind of taking away her free will and the fact that she specifically said "No, I'm not ready" makes it even worse.

Agreed, it's not cool and he's going to get it in the jugular when the missus finds out. However, you've all read Taking Turnsies, and you all knew this was coming! :-P

And let's be real, spouses play such tricks on each other all the time, though it's usually the wife who is pushing for the baby when the husband isn't quite ready to be a dad. I know it's usually easier to accept when a woman does it, because she's the one who has to carry the baby and takes the risks... but I am intrigued at the reversal in this instance, and how the discovery will play out.

Thankfully, we all know they'll both be over the moon about it when the time comes. But until then... get ready for fireworks! :-P

Great comments, gals. Many thanks, and my apologies if I made you uncomfortable.

Thanks for responding, Dee. I hope it didn't come across like I was slamming your work - I realized too late how negative that sounded. I think we just have different takes on the subject and we may have to just agree to disagree. Doesn't mean I don't still think you're a great writer! This debate is actually quite interesting, and thank you for explaining your side. I do see what you're saying with women tricking men into having a baby, but my issue is - I don't think that's cool either. As sexist against the man as this sounds - I do actually think it's worse for a man to do it because he's not the one carrying the child.

So again - I apologize for being so negative, but we can't all agree on everything all of the time! I will stick with this because I trust you and am willing to see where you take it and it does help hearing you explain where you're coming from. :) Still love ya!

P.S. In my defense, (not that it's much of one) I read way too many fics and didn't remember what happened in Taking Turnsies. I will go back and re-read it. :)

"Thanks for responding, Dee. I hope it didn't come across like I was slamming your work - I realized too late how negative that sounded."

Oh no, not at all! I welcome healthy debate in my fics; it gets the brain wheels turning. :-)

"I think we just have different takes on the subject and we may have to just agree to disagree."

I never said I agreed with Ollie's methods. I just think it's something he would do, and would justify it with the knowledge that Chloe would be angry at first, but love her baby nevertheless. Underhanded tactic, for sure, but a very Ollie-like move. :-)

"Doesn't mean I don't still think you're a great writer!"

*blushes* Aww, thanks! :-D

"This debate is actually quite interesting, and thank you for explaining your side. I do see what you're saying with women tricking men into having a baby, but my issue is - I don't think that's cool either."

It's never cool, no matter who's doing the tricking. But it is interesting to get to the dynamics behind it when (a) it's a guy doing the tricking, and (b) he's not doing it for financial security, as is often the case when women try to trap a man into having a baby with them.

"As sexist against the man as this sounds - I do actually think it's worse for a man to do it because he's not the one carrying the child."

Nothing sexist about it. Pregnancy is full of risks, and it wasn't Oliver's place to make that decision unilaterally.

"So again - I apologize for being so negative, but we can't all agree on everything all of the time! I will stick with this because I trust you and am willing to see where you take it and it does help hearing you explain where you're coming from. :) Still love ya!

Love ya too, babes. As I said, the fact that I'm writing it doesn't mean I agree with all of Oliver's methods. I'm just trying to be true to the character, even if some of the character traits I explore aren't' particularly attractive. I did the same with Chloe in Funsies & Realsies, and now it's Oliver's turn. :-)

"P.S. In my defense, (not that it's much of one) I read way too many fics and didn't remember what happened in Taking Turnsies. I will go back and re-read it. :)"

I hope you enjoy it! It shouldn't take too long, it's just a short oneshot. And it'll have you smiling by the end!

Thanks for the explanation! I'm getting your thought process a bit better now. :) I know I'm beating a dead horse (you can tell me to piss off whenever :D ), but since you welcome healthy debate in your fics I would challenge just one more item and that would be the issue of Ollie's character. I do agree he's crafty, but I question that he'd break Chloe's trust like that. Trust seemed to be one of the strongest foundations of their relationship, primarily because they had/have so many secrets from other people.

But it is just a story and I am now utterly intrigued as to where you'll take it - there should be some good, hearty friction coming our way! And with that I will shut up now.

P.S. Taking Turnsies was adorable - I do remember it now. :D

Never! :-D

I would agree with that...to a degree. In some fics, written either by myself or other awesome writers, the focus of the story is in the strength of their mutual trust for each other. Beauty in the Breakdown is a prime example of that. However, the genre of this particular series is far grittier, focusing on the development of their relationship from the elements that would have otherwise broken it: sex and nothing more, misappropriated funds for weapons and the resulting disappointment and near fallout from that, fears of falling for each other, and Oliver's underhanded tactics when he decided to make her face her feelings for him and accept them. If there was ever any series where I could have gotten away with Oliver meddling with Chloe's contraception, it's this one. And if they've weathered all those storms and ended up married and in love, they will weather this one, too. :-)

"But it is just a story and I am now utterly intrigued as to where you'll take it - there should be some good, hearty friction coming our way! And with that I will shut up now."

You're welcome to comment again if you fancy it! As I said, nothing like healthy debate to get the brain going. :-D

From: [identity profile] babydee1.livejournal.com
If he comes clean, he risks losing out on being a father for another three years. I don't think he'll want to wait that long, do you? He's weighed the risks, and has decided the temporary wrath of his missus is worth having a child of their own to hold in the next ten months or so. Underhanded tactic, certainly... but oh so very typically Oliver. ;-)

Thanks for commenting!

Oh boy Ollie is taking a huge risk deleting Chloe's reminder. You know she's going to find out and when she does he is going to have hell to pay.
On the other hand Chloe shouldn't have deflected the issue because this is an issue for them. Even if they didn't get deep on the subject she should've given Ollie a little something.
I am so looking forward to reading more.
Thank you for sharing.
Happy writing.

Oh, he knows. He's banking on her being too excited about the baby to care too much about throttling him, but I think he's underestimated just how angry she's gonna be!

"On the other hand Chloe shouldn't have deflected the issue because this is an issue for them. Even if they didn't get deep on the subject she should've given Ollie a little something."

Agreed. She's married now, she can't think only of herself anymore.

Chloe likes to stick her head in the sand and ignore the pink elephant in the room while Oliver knows he can't take a direct approach or he might lose her so he uses underhanded "tactics". I agree with my fellow commenters, this is a controversial move Oliver pulled there, and had you not shown Chloe's obvious affection towards kids, I wouldn't have liked this.
But you did, and even if she's not ready, I think Oliver's right in this situation because he did the same in 'Love for Realsies' when Chloe wasn't ready to love him yet and he succeeded.
In my opinion it shows how well Oliver knows her and he knows that sometimes Chloe is being her own enemy and he has to fight her to show her 'what's right in front of her face' (this line definitely is Chlollie-epic).

After all, don't they say that the road to happiness is paved with hardships? ;)

The stories that make their readers react are the most interesting ones, great work Dee!

Hmmm...as a woman who's had all the children I hope to have, I wouldn't use the word 'right' to describe Oliver's actions, because if my husband did that to me, I'd be furious! And I'm sure every woman who's commented here would say the same thing. That said, I do cut Oliver a bit of slack because I know he loves his wife, and he so desperately wants a family with her. And of course, if Chloe does get pregnant, he knows she'll love the baby no matter what, even though he (Oliver) might have to live with her giving him stink-eye to begin with! :-D

"In my opinion it shows how well Oliver knows her and he knows that sometimes Chloe is being her own enemy and he has to fight her to show her 'what's right in front of her face' (this line definitely is Chlollie-epic)."

I agree. Oliver's methods may be unconventional... but they get the job done!

"After all, don't they say that the road to happiness is paved with hardships? ;)"

I actually thought it was 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions'...but I get the general idea. ;-)

"The stories that make their readers react are the most interesting ones, great work Dee!"

High praise indeed, Mark - thank you so much! Neither Chloe nor Oliver are perfect characters; they have flaws, and gosh darn it, that is what makes them so interesting to write. They're relatable; they try, they fail, they bleed, they rise, and they try again. Their hearts are in the right place, even when it doesn't seem like it; especially when it doesn't seem like it, and you just so desperately want them to be happy together. Gotta love Chloe and Oliver! :-)
