Chapter 7

“Oliver?”

“Chloe?” he replied.  “Is everything alright?”

“Everything’s fine.”

“So what did Clark want?”

“He, er…you’re not gonna believe this, but he and Lois broke up last night.” 

Silence.  Then.  “You’re kidding me.”

“I’m not.”

“I don’t understand,” he said, baffled.  “I thought those two were all written in the stars, or destined to be together or some such nonsense.”

“Looks like someone flipped the script on them,” she chuckled.  “It turned out Clark was on the hunt for a disguise, and by the time Lois was done with him, he was wearing a hooded leather jacket, complete with dark glasses.” 

“Excuse me?” he barked. 

“Seriously,” she mused.  “According to Clark, Lois was an e-bay click away from ordering a voice-distorter, green fabric dye and L’Oreal’s Perfect Blonde for Men.” 

Silence again.  “You’re not prank-calling me, are you, Chloe?” he finally asked on a sombre voice. 

She shook her head, even though he couldn’t see her.  “No.” 

She could hear his fingers drumming on the solid oak desk.  “Come to think of it, when I needed to adopt a new look, you dyed my hair brown and gave me blue-green eyes.”

She made a wry face.  “Yeah, about that...” she trailed off.  There really was nothing more to add. 

More finger drumming.  Then: “Where’s Lois now?”

“At the Daily Planet, but she has a flight to Egypt at eleven o’clock tonight,” she replied.  “If you go now, you’ll probably be able to catch her before she leaves the office.” 

Oliver took a deep breath.  “Chloe Sullivan, you are an amazing woman,” he finally said, his voice warm and appreciative.  “I hope Clark knows how lucky he is to have you.”

“I never said he’d asked me out,” she said defensively.

“He’d be a damn fool not to,” he said warningly.  “But I have a feeling he’s not as stupid as he sometimes looks.”

“Hey, be nice!” she chided, and he laughed. 

“Thank you, Chloe,” he said.  “I really hope he makes you happy.”

“I hope so too,” she said, glancing at her braceleted wrist before turning to look at Clark as he sat patiently waiting inside the caves.  “Take care, Ollie – and good luck.” 

She hung up the phone and returned inside.  Clark smiled and got to his feet as she approached.

“Ready to go now?” he asked, and she nodded.  He held the flashlights in one hand and took her hand with the other. 

“Let’s go,” he said.  “Oh, and Chloe?”

“Yeah?”

Strong arms surrounded her and his lips descended on hers, warm and inviting.  Chloe heard the flashlights fall to the floor as Clark’s hands pressed flat against her back and caressed her gently, while his lips teased and clung to hers. 

He head swam and her blood heated in her veins as Clark lifted her up against him so she could feel his body hardening against hers.  Her toes brushed the floor and quickly wrapped her arms around his neck, furrowing her hands in his hair and pulling him even closer.  He slanted his mouth over hers and stroked the seam of her lips with his tongue, gently seeking entrance.  Chloe moaned and parted her lips and immediately his tongue slipped into her mouth to tangle with hers. 

As first kisses went, this one was an absolute scorcher.  Heat bloomed between them and the kiss got deeper and hotter until Clark finally lifted his head and took deep gulps of air, slowly lowering her to the ground. 

“…and now I’ve kissed you,” he said huskily.  “And if that doesn’t count, I don’t know what will.”

Chloe breathed deeply and managed to smiled up at him.  “It counts,” she said breathlessly when she could finally form words.  “It definitely counts.” 

“Good,” he said with a wide grin.  “I always knew there was something special about you.”  He stroked her cheek with his finger and swallowed.  “I love you, Chloe.” 

For a moment in time her heart stopped beating and she stared up at him, her eyes and mouth wide open. 

She was hearing things.  She must be.  Had he just said…?

“I love you,” he repeated, his breath warm against her lips.  “You are my one and only, Chloe, my Soulmate; you always have been.  There’s no doubt in my mind.” 

Tears welled up in her eyes and slid down her cheeks and Clark lifted a hand to her face to wipe them away. 

“Can I ask you a question?” she said tearfully.

“Anything.”

“Is there an omega on my head?” 

Clark burst out laughing and stared intently at her forehead. 

“No, there isn’t,” he confirmed.  “And I didn’t expect there to be one, either.  Ask me why.” 

“Why?”

He gave her a broad grin.  “Because Love isn’t one of the Seven Deadly Sins.” 

She nodded and smiled, staring at him and still willing herself to wake up from this beautiful, beautiful dream.

“I love you, Clark,” she said with a sniffle. 

He smiled and bent to pick up the flashlights, and then lifted her into his arms in one fluid move.  “I know,” he whispered, his gaze tender.  “Now let’s go home.”

“How did you do it?” he asked.  “Trust me, I mean; back then before you knew my secret?” 

She grinned sweetly.  “I had my suspicions.”

“But that’s what I mean,” he went on.  “You knew that I was lying but still you looked me in the eye everyday…and you trusted me.” 

She frowned, her brow furrowing delicately.  “I guess that’s the true test of believing in someone; knowing that their lies are there to protect you,” she explained, and smiled.  “It’s not really trust if you ask someone to explain themselves, is it?”

This time his brow creased in a perplexed frown.   “But that’s hard.”

She nodded, amused at his expression.  “It’s really hard.” 

Clark stared at her then; that deep, searching look that always gave her hope that deep down inside, he felt something more for her than just friendship. 

“You never gave up,” he finally said, his eyes warm and full of comprehension. 

She smiled and for one second, she let her guard down and allowed her own latent feelings to rise to the surface, returning his intense gaze with one of her own.

 “And I never will.”

I still think that this is what those extra cuts on the editing room floor looked like. I never bought Chlollie, it was ALWAYS like Chloe had just settled for next.

Lois has never been Clark's equal and I'm still appalled to think that Martha would say so when she knows full well that it has always been Chloe by his side.

Kissing her like that counts for everything, Clark!

Mercifully, I can't remember that episode, or that part of that episode. :-P

My Chlarky Happy Ending is never completed until they've sealed the deal with some seks. So yes - there shall be a sequel! ;-)

Major screw-up on the part of the writers, but their loss is my gain. It's such a wonderful jumping-off point for fix-it fics, because now we know what really goes on in Chloe's head. ;-)

Wow, it never occurred to me. Lois's transformation was in your face, but i honestly didn't see it where the guys were concered. I just thought it was the shows attempt at humor, but it really looks suspicious.
You know I'm a huge fan of Chlollie, so the break-up was hard for me.
I really loved this fic and would love a sequel.

Makes you wonder what they really would have done if they didn't have the threat of DC Canon hanging over their heads, doesn't it? ;-)

I love Chlollie to bits, so it was difficult for me, too. *sobs* This is actually the first time I've broken them up (apart from in Misdirection, and there are plans to bring them back together in that series). I was determined to make sure that Oliver didn't suffer in this story, because he doesn't deserve it. On the flip side, I love torturing Clark in my Chlollie fics because he's been such a pillock! :-P

Wow... just wow.

I must admit, I did not start this with very high hopes, and I have already forgotten why.

This story lets all the puzzle pieces that make up Smallville to bring together a perfect picture of Chloe and Clark in love as they should have been years earlier. Not falling into a rushed jumble that is what they gave us.

Like I've always thought: If the story is told with just a boy and a girl growing up into man and woman without the guy's name being Clark Kent, no one would have any doubt that after their decade of trials, fights, challenges, sacrifices and affection, they would find the person who they want to spend the rest of their lives with in each other.

This ending you provided is what ties up the decade-long story nicely. All your stories are very easy to visualize in the world of Smallville, but this might be the best of them all.

Awesome, thanks. In my original plan the "new Supergirl" has a rather small role, but I liked writing her so much she's pretty much taking over "So Fate Demands" entirely (as the name implies, I originally intended for it to be centered on Chloe being Doctor Fate).

This work is the one that made me so addicted to Chloe/Clark I can't help but think of it when I was listening to "Tennessee Waltz" and "Changing Partners" (R.I.P. Patti Page, and yes, I'm old-fashioned). Especially the latter:

If they had ever decided to get those two together this would have been ideal. I really enjoyed this one though have had to fight with my Chollie side in the beginning when she broke up with Oliver but I am good now....

I think the writers deliberately left enough nuggets in the canon to change direction if they so wished, and I'm really glad they did. :-)

It broke my heart to break them up! It's the first time I've ever written a Chlollie break-up that wasn't temporary, so it was extremely difficult. But I made sure he got a happy ending, too. :-)
