Chapter 5
Chloe and Oliver wasted no time making up for the brief spell they’d spent apart. They made love several times through the night, their intimate union all sweeter than ever for the declarations of love that accompanied them.
She’d never have thought a perfect relationship could get any better, but it had, and she was surprised and delighted by the sheer intensity of her feelings for him. Heck, even the sex was better; richer somehow, deeper and more fulfilling, no longer on just a physical level.
“I love you,” he whispered, stroking her damp hair off her forehead as she basked in the afterglow of his lovemaking. “You know I do, don’t you?”
She smiled and gazed lovingly at him. “I know. But I’ll never get tired of hearing it.” She took his hand and pressed it over her heart. “I love you too, Ollie. I always will.”
“Good to know.” He grinned back at her, and then his smile turning into a deep yawn as he stretched, his arms going out wide. “Man, I am so worn out…”
Chloe snorted and gave him a sardonic look. “Yeah, three nookies in one night will do that to a man,” she giggled.
“And not to a woman?” he challenged wearily, switching off the bedside lamp and snuggling close to her. “No fair. How come you’re not tired?”
“I napped all afternoon, remember?” she reminded him, running her fingers through his spiky hair.
“Oh, right. Well, I’d love to stay and chat, but my eyes just can’t stay open any longer. G’night, honey.” He gave her arm a gentle squeeze and then started to drop off.
Suddenly she remembered something. “Oh - Ollie?”
He cracked one tired eye open. “Yah…?”
“You wanted to give me something, earlier?”
He grinned. “Oh, I gave it to you, alright.”
“Not that, silly,” she giggled, thumping him. “Something else; a gift, or…?”
“Gift?” he mumbled sleepily. “Oh, that…” he reached out and pulled open the dresser drawer one-handed, fumbling blindly in it until his fingers closed around an object which he extricated and pressed into her palm. “…There ya go.”
“Aw, Ollie!” she exclaimed, her eyes widening at the sight of the Cartier-branded black velvet jewellery box. Oliver had surprised her with an emerald necklace a month ago, and had suggested rather strongly (despite her loud protests) that they needed a pair of matching earrings to complete the look. Slowly she lifted the lid, fully expecting to see two small green gems twinkling in a bed of velvet.
Instead, she was greeted with the sight of a sparkling square-cut diamond set in a 24-karat platinum ring.
***
Chloe’s eyes nearly popped out of her head.
She stared at the rings and blinked, thinking she must surely be seeing images projected by her subconscious which was probably still on a euphoric high from the I love you’s of the day. Closing the lid, she shook her head wildly and then stared inside the box again, but the items within neither disappeared into thin air nor morphed into emerald studs.
On closer inspection she noticed that the ring box also contained both a classic platinum band and an eternity ring that was set with a small central emerald, flanked by three equal-sized diamonds on either side.
Her heart fluttered wildly in her chest. Now she knew why Oliver had sounded so earnest on the phone: he was planning to propose to her.
“Oliver…” she swallowed and started again, prodding him a little. “Honey…”
He stirred and snuggled closer to her. “Hmm?”
“Oliver…this is a ring.”
He nodded. “Mmm-hmm.”
“It…looks like an engagement ring and a wedding ring set,” she clarified, her voice surprisingly even.
“Mmm, they are,” he mumbled with sleepy pride. “I picked them out myself this very morning, and I have this…whole grand speech I was working on…” he trailed off, and she shook his shoulder hard, jogging him awake again.
“Grand speech?” she echoed. “What grand speech?”
He waved a tired hand in the air. “Y’know…the love we share, never wanna live without you, you complete me, yadda yadda yadda…” he turned over in bed and yawned. “Oh, what the heck. You’ll marry me, right?”
She blinked. “Uh – yeah, sure.”
“Cool.” He tightened his arms around her and started drifting off.
“Oh wait,” he said, dragging one eye open as he tried to slide backwards off the bed. “sorry…almost forgot; should I like, get down on one knee, or---”
“Ollie,” she whispered tenderly, grasping his shoulders and heaving him back up, “You’re rambling. Go to sleep, okay? We’ll talk in the morning.”
“Mmmkay.” He gave her a grateful, lazy smile and flopped forward onto the bed with an unceremonious thump.
“Night, honey,” he mumbled into the pillow. “…love you.”
“Love you, too.”
He relaxed and his lashes drifted shut again. A few seconds later he was asleep, snoring lightly.
***
Chloe regarded her sleeping fiancé with a raised brow.
Fiancé.
Ooookay.
In the space of less than two hours, they had somehow not only both declared their love for each other, but also somehow gotten engaged.
She stared at the rings in the box for a moment longer, and her brow furrowed in thought. Getting engaged was a big step; had she been too hasty? Maybe she should have held back a little bit before making a commitment. Or at least waited until the proposer was more than semi-conscious, she thought wryly.
But try as she might, she couldn’t find even a smidgeon of doubt in her mind to tarnish her decision. She and Oliver loved each other. He was the man she wanted to be with, and that was the truth. Convention dictated that they date a while further before making firm plans, but hey; they never had done anything the conventional way in their relationship, and it had worked brilliantly well for them so far. No sense in trying to fix what wasn’t broken.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Chloe lifted the rings out of the box and slid all three of them onto her the third finger of her left hand. She stretched out her arm and inspected the sparkling gems on her finger, and smiled broadly.
They were a perfect fit. Much like herself and Oliver.
Smiling, she settled down in Oliver’s arms, planted a quick kiss on his lips and drifted off into a peaceful, pleasant slumber.

And of course my standart question, they are chances for next chapter of Crisis in this week or nexts?

Date: 2011-11-16 08:35 am (UTC)There's no chance for a Crisis update until well into December or even January, I'm afraid. But you know I always to a 5-chapter stretch on that one, so it'll be well worth the wait! :)

Date: 2011-11-16 05:45 am (UTC)I've had such a long day... that proposal has me in freakin stitches right now. Seriously Dee, do you check my schedule and plan these things when I need a laugh the most? Because I swear, you always come through!
It's oddly casual, sure, but in a way, so perfect, and I can actually see it happening.
*hugs you* You're the best Dee, thanks so much for posting this now!!

Date: 2011-11-16 08:49 am (UTC)A very unexpected and unconventional proposal, true - but very Chlollie-like (and a hundred times better than skipping it entirely and going straight into a wedding that neither of them can remember, LOL!!!) :-D
I'm sure they'll have lots to say about it in the morning, though. ;)
So glad you liked it, Sera! And happy to make you smile. :) *hugs*

Thank you! The Good News is that I've already started writing it. (YAY!) The Not-so-Good News is that I must focus on my Big Bang for the next few weeks, which must be complete by 9th December, so I have to pause on this one for a while. But I'll come back to it soon, I promise!
So glad you liked it!

Date: 2011-11-16 06:37 pm (UTC)I've read this with a smile on my face and the conviction that what you wrote is so right. The proposal was pretty surprising and unusual in its casualness. But it was pretty sweet, too. Oliver, half-asleep, with all the cliches, overused, but nevertheless true in their case.
Finally, now Oliver believes Chloe won't freak out, leave him, run away, be scared of being with him in every way possible. We've seen how Chloe has come to believe completely in theie relationship and love. I am happy to see that now Oliver believes that Chloe does, too. It makes the proposal right. And it is nice to know Oliver bought the rings with the intention of saying he loves Chloe, and how much she means to him. And what a surprise he got when unexpected declarations of love on the phone foiled his plan!
I'm not surprised Chloe wondered for a moment if such a big commitment was right at the time. Just because she is all in, doesn't mean she won't be shocked in such an important moment in her life. And it was so quick after the 'I love you's.'
Still, I wish I could see the morning after, or the afternoon after. When Ollie wakes up to the sight of Chloe with three rings on her finger (Possessive Ollie, anyone?). When he remembers asking the question and Chloe's answer. She was like:“Uh – yeah, sure.” And I was like:“Uh – yeah, sure! She'll marry him.”
I've come to love the way the show dealt with Chloe and Oliver's marriage, though there was too little of them shown.
But you got Chloe and Oliver an unusual engagement with rings (a great idea, unexpected, but very much Oliver). And I loved it.
Waiting for 'Living Life'. I've got a feeling 'Life isn't too strong' for Chloe and Oliver.
