Chapter 23
The moment Clark arrived home, he knew he was in trouble. His mother was standing on the porch with folded arms, tapping her foot restlessly.
He soon found out why.
“So when exactly were you going to tell us about how you nearly died in a Luthorcorp elevator, hmm?”
Crap. He should have known the incident in Metropolis wouldn’t stay hidden forever. If he were honest, he was surprised she hadn’t found out sooner.
He swallowed and gave his mother a reassuring smile. “It wasn’t anything serious, Mom.”
“No?” she queried, and waved a sheaf of papers in his face. “This says otherwise, Clark. You were taken to Met Gen in an ambulance!”
Busted. “I thought Luthorcorp were going to take care of that,” he muttered.
“They paid for it, yes,” she grated. “And the hospital was kind enough to provide us with a copy of the invoice, or we might never have known. How could you keep something like this from us, Clark?”
Clark sighed heavily. When did the world become so darned efficient?
“Did you honestly think we wouldn’t find out?” she blazed on. “I’ve had Sara Samson from the Ledger asking me how you’re faring after your trip to the brink of death, and I had no idea what she was talking about! What exactly happened to you?”
He rubbed his eyes wearily. “I told you, it was nothing serious-”
“Then why hide it from us?” she cried. “And that’s not all you’ve been hiding. According to Sara’s daughter, you’ve been having fainting spells for more than a month! Fainting spells? You?”
Shit. The perils of living in a small town...
Clark swallowed and stared at the floor. “I didn’t want you to worry,” he said quietly.
Martha Kent folded her arms and sighed. “Sit down, honey,” she said, and pulled up a chair herself. “Let’s start with today. What happened to you in that elevator? Was it kryptonite?”
He supposed it couldn’t really have been anything else. “Yeah.”
“How did it get there?”
“I...don’t know,” he finished lamely.
“Oh, God.” His mother’s face paled, and her eyes widened. “Please tell me it isn’t Lionel. If he knows your secret-”
“No Mom, it’s nothing like that,” he hastily reassured her.
Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. “Then what is it ‘like’?’” she quizzed. “Because I get the distinct feeling this was no accident. Did someone douse you with kryptonite deliberately?”
He looked away. “Of course not.”
His mother snorted. “I’m your mother, Clark. I know when you’re lying,” she insisted, her voice firm and authoritative. “Who did this to you? Tell me the truth!”
“Okay!” he said helplessly. “Okay, I will, just…promise me you won’t tell Dad. Please.”
Martha’s faced paled and her eyes widened in horror. “Oh, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us all,” she said hollowly. “Chloe?”
“Mom-”
“It’s Chloe, isn’t it?” she continued, rising slowly and staring in disbelief. “She’s using kryptonite on you.”
He gulped. “Mom, it’s not as bad as it sounds-”
“Are you kidding me?” she roared. “Listen to yourself, Clark! She almost killed you!”
“She didn’t mean to, it was an accident this time!” he defended loudly. “She had no idea the elevator was going to stall, otherwise she would never have-”
“This time?” she echoed, her voice a shaky whisper. “There have been other times? She’s done this before?”
Oh, shit. Shit, shit, shit.
He held up his hands. “Mom, let me explain…”
“My God, what has she been doing to you?” Martha cried. “Those ‘fainting spells’ – it’s all been Chloe, deliberately hurting you, hasn’t it?”
“You don’t understand-”
“What is there to understand?” she yelled incredulously.
“She’s scared of me, Mom! She just...needs to feel safe-”
“By torturing you? Clark, that’s...that’s sick!” she raged. “You gave her that kryptonite because you trusted her, and this is how she repays you? I’m calling your father right now!”
Clark stared in alarm as his mother she strode over to the counter and picked up the phone.
“You promised you wouldn’t tell him!” he exclaimed.
“I promised nothing,” she shot back, furiously punching the numbers. “And I won’t sit by while Chloe terrorises and tortures you to death!”
“I don’t care if she hurts me,” he replied flatly. “After what I did to her, I deserve it.”
His mother stopped dialling and stared at him as if he’d taken leave of his senses.
“Oh, Clark,” she said brokenly, taking his hand. “I’m not saying Chloe doesn’t have a right to be angry with you, because she does. And yes, you do deserve to be punished for what you did to her, but not like this. I know you hurt her-”
“No, Mom, I raped her!” he cried as his mother winced at the word in all its ugliness. “I held her down, tore off her clothes and I raped her!”
“Clark, don’t,” she pleaded.
He ignored her. “She was crying and struggling and pleading with me to stop, but I didn’t listen. She said no, over and over, and I just covered her mouth with my hand and-”
“Stop it!” Martha sobbed, covering her ears. “Please stop, Clark. I can’t hear this. I can’t...”
He stopped, tears coursing down his cheeks even as his mother wept, confronted with the cold, hard misery of the truth.
“You see?” he said softly. “That’s what she has to live with everyday. And I’m not some stranger that jumped out of the bushes, I was her best friend, Mom. Her best friend...”
His mother didn’t reply. She sobbed brokenly for several minutes, unable to speak.
“That’s why I have to go through this,” he went on. “Chloe may be hurting me, but what I did to her was far worse.”
Eventually Martha wiped her face and slowly sat at the table.
“I can’t even begin to imagine how betrayed she must feel,” she finally said, sniffing. “Just trying to think about it breaks my heart.
“But Clark; what she’s doing to you…this isn’t the way to punish you. She’s doing exactly what you did to her, which is use a position of trust to abuse you. Can’t you see that this can only make things worse?”
“I don’t know what else to do, Mom,” he said with a despondent sigh.
“There are proper ways to go about this,” she replied. “Your Dad and I, we can go to the police station with you and you can own up to what you did...”
“I’m ready to go, but Chloe doesn’t want that.”
She frowned. “Why not?”
“She said that prison won’t hold me, and I can escape whenever I want to. I wouldn’t do that, I’m ready to do my time, but-”
“But she can’t take you at your word anymore,” she finished, understanding the problem.
He nodded. “Also…she knows you lost a baby, Mom. She doesn’t want to take me away from you, too.”
Martha gaped. “What? Is that why she doesn’t want to turn you in?”
He sighed helplessly. “I don’t know. There may be other reasons…I think she’s trying to do what’s best for everyone.”
“But what about what’s best for her?” she replied. “Seeing you walking around everyday has to be extremely traumatic for her!”
“That’s why she does what she does, Mom,” he explained. “Hurting me a little...I guess it makes her feel like less of a victim.”
Martha ran a hand through her hair and sighed heavily.
“Clark, I feel so bad for her, but my God, this isn’t the way, and I’m not just saying that because you’re my son,” she insisted. “Chloe needs counselling, she needs to talk to someone about what happened to her.”
“I know, Mom, but who?” he argued. “Who’s she going to tell that she was raped by an alien?”
Martha looked away, conflict in her sad gaze. “So what, she continues to torture you to keep you in line?” she asked.
“She needs this,” he said stubbornly.
“This isn’t therapy, Clark, it’s a recipe for disaster. She could easily kill you, whether she means to or not.” She leaned towards him and her eyes filled with tears again. “And sooner or later you’re going to get frustrated and angry with what she’s doing, and you’re going to snap. And then what?”
He doubted that was possible, but even so, things were likely to improve soon. Lex had texted him to say that he’d had a breakthrough in finding Gabe Sullivan a job, and he just needed to confirm one or two details before making a confirmation.
“Just give me a few more days,” he pleaded. “I know what I’m doing, Mom. Please trust me on this.”
“Clark…” she sighed.
“Please,” he begged. “I don’t believe she’ll hurt me again; she’s had the opportunity to do so several times this week, but she hasn’t. I really think she’s getting better.”
Martha’s shoulders sagged, and she reluctantly relented.
“Two days,” she finally conceded. “And improvement or not, I’m talking to your father. There has to be another way for both of you to heal, and we need to start thinking about what that might be.”

"This story is really tough and interesting. The part where Clark describes what he's done to Chloe to his mother breaks my heart. Martha knows what happened but can't really picture it and listening to Clark talking about it, trying to make her understand he hurt Chloe like that, must be really hard."
It must be the worst thing a mother can hear about her child. Tough and damn near impossible to write, I tell ya. :-/
Thanks for your comments, babes! Appreciate it. *hugs*

“Fantastically written chapter.”
Thanks, Kim! :-D
“I really hope the healing starts for them both soon. Perhaps the best thing is for Chloe would be to move with Gabe when he gets his new job...”
Ah, but that would be a cop-out...and I don’t do cop-outs. You’ll just have to wait and see how it all pans out. ;-)

Damn, I knew I should have bought stock in kleenex before reading any further chapters.
This was almost as traumatic as his acceptance that he might die in that elevator. That sentence and the tortured way he doesn't shy away from telling his mother the horrible details of 'raping' (vs. 'hurting') his best friend shows that he does understand exactly how devastating his crime against Chloe was.
But I so disagree with him: he has no clue what he's doing!
He may believe Chloe needs to torture him and abuse his trust. And even that his willingness to let her do her worst will help her. Also, just because she hasn't tried to hurt him in the last few days doesn't mean she's getting better!
But he's maybe much too young to understand the long term damage this can do to Chloe; I doubt 'getting better' is the right kind of phrase; she needs help to understand her own feelings of anger, shock and horror; to find ways to accept that this happened to her; that she did nothing to deserve it and to rebuild trust in herself and others (even if trusting Clark may never again happen) - she needs to build herself back up - and not taint her own soul with borderline criminal acts. Living with knowing she wants to deliberately hurt someone else no matter how justified she feels at the time, will eventually build a seed of guilt that will grow until she can't live with it, because she is a very good person at her core.
So glad Martha is willing to jump in before this gets any more out of control. So good that she understands Clark's need to have his parents stand by him AND Chloe; and to do what's best for both of them; but mostly that she knows Chloe needs to get help and accepts that Clark will have to pay for his crime! But certainly not in a way that will damage Chloe more than she already is.
Now, Jonathan, I'm fairly sure will be more difficult to convince. His first worry is always about Clark's secret being revealed to anyone, let alone the wrong people! I think it will take a lot more of Martha's wisdom to make him see what will truly be best for everyone to somehow move on from this.
I was also impressed with Martha mentioning that Chloe's torture could unintentionally push Clark beyond the edge! Just look at the torture that was his life before when the guilt drove him to Metropolis in the first place! This guilt is sooooooo much worse!
>>>>>>>>>>.......<<<<<<<<<< Putting the brakes on and screeching to a halt! Don't know what it is about this story... I just jump on this endless reviews bandwagon...
Well, it's just such an emotional story and you're doing so wonderfully with exploring all the aspects from everyone's viewpoint... I just can't stop commenting!
(hope you don't mind...)
I know you said in the beginning as a reply to someone at K-site that you hardly expected any comments to this story as it was so dark, but the truly sensitive way you are writing this just invites reader reaction; I know it's getting mine!
Keep up the great work... I know you have other stories you're working on, but I'm still gonna be greedy and say I hope you can continue this one again soon...

Date: 2011-09-13 12:15 pm (UTC)Oh, dear. Between Kleenex and computer screen-melting insurance, I fear my fanfic updates costing you quite a few bob. :-)
“This was almost as traumatic as his acceptance that he might die in that elevator. That sentence and the tortured way he doesn't shy away from telling his mother the horrible details of 'raping' (vs. 'hurting') his best friend shows that he does understand exactly how devastating his crime against Chloe was.”
For her to go to the levels that she’s going to, he knows that she must be deeply scarred.
“But I so disagree with him: he has no clue what he's doing!
He may believe Chloe needs to torture him and abuse his trust. And even that his willingness to let her do her worst will help her. Also, just because she hasn't tried to hurt him in the last few days doesn't mean she's getting better!”
It doesn’t. It’s a quick fix, to be sure, but all quick fixes ever do is satisfy the now and foster an addiction to the same in the future. So this ‘torture’ thing is a bad idea, for sure.
“But he's maybe much too young to understand the long term damage this can do to Chloe; I doubt 'getting better' is the right kind of phrase; she needs help to understand her own feelings of anger, shock and horror; to find ways to accept that this happened to her; that she did nothing to deserve it and to rebuild trust in herself and others (even if trusting Clark may never again happen) - she needs to build herself back up - and not taint her own soul with borderline criminal acts. Living with knowing she wants to deliberately hurt someone else no matter how justified she feels at the time, will eventually build a seed of guilt that will grow until she can't live with it, because she is a very good person at her core.”
BINGO. As Martha said, it’s recipe for disaster.
More in Part 2!

Date: 2011-09-13 12:25 pm (UTC)And that, Ladies & Gents, is my dilemma. But I fully intend to sort it out in the best way that I can, for everyone. :-)

Which is why I hope to get this somewhat resolved before Jonathan gets involved!
“I was also impressed with Martha mentioning that Chloe's torture could unintentionally push Clark beyond the edge!”
Interesting you should pick up on that... ;-)
“Just look at the torture that was his life before when the guilt drove him to Metropolis in the first place! This guilt is sooooooo much worse!”
Exponentially so. *shudders*

“I know you said in the beginning as a reply to someone at K-site that you hardly expected any comments to this story as it was so dark, but the truly sensitive way you are writing this just invites reader reaction; I know it's getting mine!”
It’s been such a revelation, and I’m glad I can carry people along with me. I’ve had brilliant responses to this story, it’s almost unreal. I had no idea when I started this story that it would be so profoundly intriguing. But I’m not complaining, oh, no! Happy to keep writing and exploring all nuances of this strange tale. :-)
“Keep up the great work... I know you have other stories you're working on, but I'm still gonna be greedy and say I hope you can continue this one again soon...”
There’s at least one more update (maybe two) coming before I have to return to my other WIPs and my Big Bang fic, which has a fast-approaching deadline. So I’ll take another mini-hiatus somewhere down the line, but you know I’ll return to it in full force!
So much love for you and your awesomely brilliant reviews, Mari. Thanks so much for taking so much time to write and share them with us! *cuddles*

Date: 2011-09-12 12:40 pm (UTC)Even though it was horrible for Martha to listen to, I'm damn proud of Clark for voicing exactly what he did to Chloe. He understands what he did and he's sickened by his own actions--Good for him.
“Clark, I feel so bad for her, but my God, this isn’t the way, and I’m not just saying that because you’re my son,” she insisted. “Chloe needs counselling, she needs to talk to someone about what happened to her.”
Martha is absolutely right--Chloe needs counseling, in order to heal and torturing Clark is not the way to go about it.
Continued excellent work on this, Dee :)

“Even though it was horrible for Martha to listen to, I'm damn proud of Clark for voicing exactly what he did to Chloe.”
Me too. That was a very, very hard thing for him to do, and an equally hard thing for me to write. Even though she’s well aware of what happened, No mother wants to hear that about her child, much less picture it; but she needed to have it spelt out to her in order to have a balanced view of the whole picture. Sad...but necessary.
“Martha is absolutely right--Chloe needs counseling, in order to heal and torturing Clark is not the way to go about it.”
Also true. But Clark also has a point in that she needs to speak to someone who can understand, who isn’t biased, and who she can share the entire truth with otherwise there’s really no point. Therein lies the problem, which I shall valiantly attempt to solve.
“Continued excellent work on this, Dee :)”
Always a pleasure, Kit! :-)

Date: 2011-09-12 01:18 pm (UTC)But I just need to tell you that I LOVE your fics, this one is one of my favourites.
I think that you are doing a great job with this story and its pov, specially with Matha.Because, she is a mother right?,and usually a mother doesn't want to see the evilness in her child and the things that he/she can do.
When she said "I know she is angry"(or something like that),the only thing I can think about is "do you know what Clark really did?".I mean,it's not like when your friend is lying to you (in your face, for example),it's worse than that.
I believe that she is doing what she it's doing because when Chloe does it,she feels like she can control him,her life, the situation...Ok,maybe it's not the best thing to do but she thinks it's the only way.He hurt her,not just phisically but her feelings(she loved him),her trust...Doing that it's the only way that Chloe can make him feel just a bit of what she feel.
It would be right find someone to talk,no one can understan the situation. It's not just that his BEST friend raped her,it's not just the guy she loves...is a person that will be called "the man of steel",how can you stop him?.If I was her,I'd not feel safe anywhere.I can't blame her.
It's because of all of this that I have to say "congratulations",because you make me feel like her, live her live, live this story.

Date: 2011-09-12 03:39 pm (UTC)Don’t you dare apologise for leaving such wonderful feedback, LOL! I’m honoured to receive comments in any language, and I admire you for writing in English. Your English is definitely better than my Spanish! :-D
“But I just need to tell you that I LOVE your fics, this one is one of my favourites.”
Aw, thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoy my work, and this story in particular as it’s so difficult to write. :-)
“I think that you are doing a great job with this story and its pov, specially with Martha. Because, she is a mother, right? And usually a mother doesn't want to see the evilness in her child and the things that he/she can do.”
It’s every mother’s worst nightmare to think her child is a criminal or has committed a horrific criminal act, so she’s really feeling the pain of that.
“When she said "I know she is angry" (or something like that),the only thing I can think about is "do you know what Clark really did?" I mean, it's not like when your friend is lying to you (in your face, for example), it's worse than that.”
It’s a lot worse, and like you said Martha would not want to think the worst of her child, so it was really heartbreaking for Clark to have to spell it all out to her in cold, hard detail.
“I believe that she is doing what she it's doing because when Chloe does it, she feels like she can control him, her life, the situation...Ok, maybe it's not the best thing to do but she thinks it's the only way. He hurt her, not just physically but her feelings (she loved him), her trust...Doing that it's the only way that Chloe can make him feel just a bit of what she feel.”
That’s EXACTLY what I’m trying to portray as Chloe’s feelings, so I’m glad it comes across that way. Thank you! :-)

Again, you’ve connected with Chloe’s feelings of utter helplessness and fear at her ordeal at the hands of her former best friend. She really is caught between a rock and a hard place, as it were.
“It's because of all of this that I have to say "congratulations", because you make me feel like her, live her life, live this story.”
It’s comments like this that encourage me to keep writing, so thank you very much for your kind words. I really appreciate it! *hugs* :-)
