Chapter 20

“Lex, I was wondering if you could help with something…” Clark began as he walked into the Luthor Mansion.

Lex gave at his young visitor a knowing smile.  “Nice to see you too, Clark.  How are you?”

Clark had the good grace to look ashamed.  “I’m sorry, I always seem to forget the niceties…”

“Strange habit of yours; the Kents raised you better than that.  But you didn’t come here for a lecture.  What can I do for you?”

 “I…need a favour,” he admitted.

“What kind of favour?”

His hand tightened on the strap of his backpack.  “A job.”

Lex raised a sardonic brow.  “Dropping out of school, Clark?  Surely things can’t be that bad at the Farm.”

Clark blinked.  “Huh?  No, it’s not for me, it’s for-”

“Chloe?”

The younger man’s eyes widened.  “How did you know?”

“Or more specifically for her Dad, I’d think,” Lex added, looking thoughtful.

Clark nodded.  “Lionel fired him last week, and now he can’t get a job anywhere in this town.”

“I know.  My father’s blacklisted him.”

“But why?”

Lex shrugged.  “Because he can is usually the right answer, but in this case there’s something that’s not sitting right.  I’ve been trying to find out what it is, but I don’t have any leads.”

Clark eyes narrowed in a frosty glare.  “Are you in on this, Lex?  Did you have a hand in firing Chloe’s dad?”

“I don’t get you, Clark,” Lex sighed, rubbing his brow.  “You come to me for help and accuse me in the same breath?”

Clark sighed despondently.  “I’m sorry, I was wrong.  I’m just so worried about Chloe…”

“Is she alright?” Lex asked, looking genuinely concerned.

Clark hesitated.  “She’s going through…stuff,” he eventually answered.

Lex frowned and folded his arms.  “What kind of stuff?”

“I’d rather not get into it; it’s kinda personal,” he said quietly.  “But this situation with her Dad isn’t helping her any, and I wouldn’t be any kind of friend if I didn’t at least try to help.”

Lex rose from his desk and went to get two bottles of water from the fridge.

“I’ve kept my ear close to the ground, but I don’t know why my Dad fired Gabe Sullivan,” he said, handing Clark one of the bottles.  “However, I’ve already put the word out to the few stalwarts that don’t care for my father that an honest man has been unfairly dismissed, and is available for work.  I’ll let you know if anyone gets back to me.”

He heaved a sigh of relief.  “I can’t thank you enough, Lex,” he said.

“Hey, I haven’t gotten the man a job yet,” he said, taking a swig from his own bottle.   “And my father’s influence spreads far and wide, so we’re not out of the woods by a long shot.  But we’ll see how it goes.”

Clark nodded.  “Thanks again, Lex. I really appreciate it.”

Lex smiled.  “Anytime.  And er…don’t let Chloe know I’m doing this, okay?  I know she doesn’t really trust me, especially with what my father’s done; but I’m honestly just trying to help.”

“I believe you,” Clark replied.  “Mum’s the word, and it goes both ways.”

Lex nodded.  “Exactly.”

“Be sure to both call and email everyday,” Chloe instructed as Pete loaded up the car with the last box. “And don’t make yourself a target at the new school.  Bullies can sense the new kid a mile away.”

“You know I never let anyone push me around, Chloe,” he replied as he affectionately ruffled her hair.  “Well…apart from you, that is.”

Chloe smiled at him with tears in her eyes and wrapped her arms around him in a warm hug.  “I’m gonna miss you,” she said, her voice breaking.

“Ditto,” he replied.  “But you’re not alone, you know.”

He glanced over to the other side of the car where Clark stood, watching them silently.

Chloe refused to acknowledge him and instead grinned at Pete.

“Neither are you.  I hear you have a familiar face waiting for you at Templar.”

He smiled.  “Yeah, Aunt Nell put in a good word for me, and they fast-tracked my admission along with Lana’s.  So that’s my silver lining all worked out.  What about yours?”

She patted his arm.  “You take care of yourself, okay?” she said, ignoring his question.

“Call us the second you get there,” Clark said.  Pete walked around to the other side and grabbed Clark in a manly hug.

“Gonna miss you, bro,” he said tightly.  “Look after that stubborn blonde for me, will you?”

Clark swallowed guiltily.  “If she’ll let me.”

“I mean it, guys,” he said earnestly.  “You two haven’t spoken in over a month, and I hate that.  Promise me you’ll work on your issues from Monday.”

Both of them stared at the ground, and Chloe pointedly glanced at her watch.

“You’d better get going, Pete, or you’ll be late,” she advised.

He rolled his eyes at her obvious deflection.  “I’d feel a lot better about moving if I knew that both of you would settle your differences and move on,” he continued.  “Can you do that for me?”

Clark nodded.  “I’ll do my best,” he promised.

Pete smiled.  “Thanks, dude.  Chloe?”

He may as well not have spoken.  Chloe just stared serenely at him, her gaze steady and sure, yet giving nothing away.  Seconds passed, but no words fell from her lips.

Pete sighed.  “I’ll call you when I get there,” he said, clearly disappointed.  He got into the car, strapped himself in and drove off, honking the horn as he got to the end of the street and turned off onto the highway.

They waved at him until the car was completely out of sight.  As soon as Chloe lowered her hand she turned her gaze on Clark and stared at him, hard.  He squirmed under the intensity of her gaze and swallowed, waiting for her to speak.

But she didn’t.  Without a word she turned and walked off down the road, heading towards her home.

The Luthorcorp Annual Visit was a standard part of the Advanced Economics curriculum at Smallville High.  Every year, the 10th Grade class was given a tour of selected Luthorcorp offices, after which they were addressed by the CEO himself, Lionel Luthor.

Clark sighed as they completed the tour of the last office and assembled on the 20th floor landing for Lionel’s address.  Back when things were good between him and Chloe, they’d laugh in the barn as Pete entertained them with a mocking, Lionelesque speech complete with posturing and grandiose gestures.  They’d looked forward to this visit for more than a year, and had all planned to stand together sniggering at Lionel and swapping snide remarks.

So much for plans, he thought wryly.  For starters, there was no Pete.  And Chloe wasn’t by his side.  She was on the opposite side of the room, listening with obvious disdain as Lionel gave them entrepreneurial nuggets to live by.

“We’re all here to learn something about business,” Lionel said, smiling at them indulgently.  “Here’s a question for you: who’s the most important factor in the economic theory?”

“One guess,” Chloe muttered, looking completely uninterested.

Lionel’s smile faded and he raised a brow.  “Am I boring you, Miss Sullivan?” he queried smoothly.

Chloe gave him a wintry smile.  “Please continue.”

Clark watched her with sad eyes.  She was obviously still very sore about her father’s termination of employment.  It had been more than a month now, and Gabe Sullivan’s job search was bearing no fruit.  They were bound to be feeling the pinch financially by now.

He frowned, thinking.  Maybe he ought to pay Lex another visit, or at least call him up on a regular basis until he’d gotten some results.

“…As I was saying, the most important factor in the economic theory is the individual,” Lionel continued.  “And that individual is the president on the $1,000 dollar bill.  Yes: You!” he said, pointing a finger at a female classmate, who giggled shyly at being singled out for attention.

“Oh, give me a break,” Chloe mumbled, flipping her hair back with disdain.

“Now listen, children, because this is very important,” Lionel went on sagely.  “Rising above the rules – and knowing when to break them – requires absolute personal commitment.”  He fixed his gaze on Chloe and gave her an icy smile.  “I consider it a…prerequisite for success.”

Chloe glared at Lionel with thinly disguised hatred as the class burst out into a smattering of applause.

“And I consider it despicable, immoral, and quite possibly illegal,” Chloe quipped bitterly – and fairly loudly.  Clark stared at her, hoping Lionel hadn’t heard her sharp response.

But he had.  “Do you perhaps have a question for me, Miss Sullivan?” he asked, folding his arms.

Chloe’s eyes narrowed dangerously.  “No.”

“I thought not,” he smirked.  “Anyone else, then?”

No one responded.  “In that case, I’ll hand you back to Mr Simms and Mrs Alice, and get back to my daily grind,” he said graciously.  “It’s been a pleasure hosting you all.”  The teachers thanked him and herded the students towards the lift.

Lionel smiled at the students as they passed him.  As soon as Chloe approached, Clark saw his eyes glitter in steely triumph.

“Miss Sullivan,” he greeted, and then turned to him.  “Mr Kent.  It’s nice to see you both looking to the future.”

Chloe clenched her fist, but managed to hold her tongue and walk past him.

“Thank you, sir,” Clark responded and headed for the elevator.  Several students were already crammed in, but he had no desire to remain in Lionel Luthor’s presence while he waited for the next elevator to arrive.  And apparently, neither did Chloe.

“Hold the door, please,” Chloe said as the doors started to slide shut.  Quickly Clark stepped back and made room for her in the tight space.

As soon as she was safely in, the doors slid shut behind her and the carriage started to descend.  He couldn’t blame her for not waiting for the other elevator, not after the way Lionel had been baiting her.  It was enough to make one sick.

The words had barely crossed his mind when a searing pain gripped his limbs and his knees began to shake.

Oh, no.  Not again.

A sick feeling of fear and dread flooded his soul along with the pain and he stared at Chloe, feeling hurt and betrayed.

She was using kryptonite on him again…and this time, there was nowhere to run.

Dear Chloe,

Not the best time to be using green K on Clark.

Love,

Jen

OMG! She truly wants him to die!!!??? And in Lionel's clutches, no less!!!!!!???? Giving Lionel everything he's ever wanted: the farm boy, helpless... just sans the silver platter! That must have been a hellishly LONG month of clamping down her anger and hatred!

What an evil cliffie! You are the best at those! Each one more evil than the last. You continue to amaze me!

A couple of tiny questions... did Chloe not get on the elevator? or was Clark staring at her with his X-ray vision (because the doors had already shut)?

Oh, it was SOOOOOOOOOO worth the wait, so fear not, Dee, we won't be leaving any time soon. (see, how well those self-help books on patience paid off... I'm getting better, right?)
;) ...sheepish grin...

I liked the meeting with Lex; you were so right-on with Clark's habit of just walking in asking for favors or tossing accusations at Lex. Had me grinning. I was impressed that Clark did ask Lex, though. He is trying everything he can to help Chloe any way possible.

Maybe Clark should have seen the worst coming when Chloe wouldn't even pretend to treat Clark nice so Pete could leave without having to worry about them. It was a little cold of her (maybe even selfish) to add that burden on Pete, knowing how much he cared about his friends. Maybe him mentioning having Lana close by didn't help bring on any kindness in Chloe's troubled heart?

Next question, cause you know I'm dying here... (eh, what? books on patience...? I have no idea what you're talking about...) Where the hell did she hide the green stuff and how did it appear as the lift doors closed? She is becoming an evil genius!

Alicia's coming to the rescue, right? Oh, my, that would just give Chloe something else to be pissed off about, if Clark made a new friend...

patience... patience... patience...
;)

Before you decent into hysterics, Mari, no...she doesn’t want to kill him. :-) They’re just taking a short elevator ride...or at least, that’s what she was planning on... :-/

“What an evil cliffie! You are the best at those! Each one more evil than the last. You continue to amaze me! ”

I’m beginning to scare myself, babes! :-O

“A couple of tiny questions... ”

Oh, here we go... :-)

“...did Chloe not get on the elevator? or was Clark staring at her with his X-ray vision (because the doors had already shut)? ”

A: She hung about outside while she extricated the greenK from its box (which she carries everywhere with her), and then got on the lift at the last minute. I think. ;-)

“Oh, it was SOOOOOOOOOO worth the wait, so fear not, Dee, we won't be leaving any time soon. (see, how well those self-help books on patience paid off... I'm getting better, right?)
;) ...sheepish grin... ”

Yeah, right!!! ;-)

“I liked the meeting with Lex; you were so right-on with Clark's habit of just walking in asking for favors or tossing accusations at Lex. Had me grinning. I was impressed that Clark did ask Lex, though. He is trying everything he can to help Chloe any way possible. ”

He’s desperately trying to make amends, and he’d happily go to prison, but that’s not what Chloe wants, and he’s trying to do right by her. But these surprise attacks are beginning to get a tad difficult for him to handle... :-/ ”

“Maybe Clark should have seen the worst coming when Chloe wouldn't even pretend to treat Clark nice so Pete could leave without having to worry about them. ”

After what Clark did to her, I don’t think she could bring herself to pretend to like him, not even for Pete’s sake. :(

“It was a little cold of her (maybe even selfish) to add that burden on Pete, knowing how much he cared about his friends. Maybe him mentioning having Lana close by didn't help bring on any kindness in Chloe's troubled heart? ”

Probably. Bear in mind that Chloe’s lost all three friends (Clark, Pete & Lana), and she’s in Lionel’s black book AND her Dad’s lost his livelihood. And she’s had to hold off punishing Clark for a month. Suffice it to say she’s not in a charitable mood. :-(

“Next question, cause you know I'm dying here... (eh, what? books on patience...? I have no idea what you're talking about...) Where the hell did she hide the green stuff and how did it appear as the lift doors closed? She is becoming an evil genius! ”

Everyone seems to think it’s a huge mystery, but it’s really very simple, LOL! S3 Chloe always wore combat-like trousers, which have loads of pockets. She keeps the lead box in a pocket at all times, more to feel safe/prevent what happened before than to use it against Clark. After Lionel was mean to her, she simply put her hand in her pocket and took the greenK out of its box.

Problem solved. Any other questions? :)

“Alicia's coming to the rescue, right? ”

Nope. :-)

“Oh, my, that would just give Chloe something else to be pissed off about, if Clark made a new friend... ”

It would...but I dare not even go down that road, I’ve got enough to deal with as it is! No, Alicia will not be appearing in this story, Mari. At least, I have no plans for her to. We’ll see how it goes. :-)

“patience... patience... patience... ;) ”

...is the Word of the Day!!! :-D

Thanks for the awesome review, hun! *hugs*

This was just lovely!

I like that Lex wants to help Gabe and that he's worried about Chloe--Chlex lives :):)

But now we have Clark getting sick from Kryptonite again but are we sure it's Chloe and not Lionel Luthor's doing?

Keep up the wonderful work on this fic :)

*beams* Thank you, Kit! :-D

“I like that Lex wants to help Gabe and that he's worried about Chloe--Chlex lives :):) ”

It does, indeed. And there’s more Chlexy goodness to come in this fic, just for you. ;-)

“But now we have Clark getting sick from Kryptonite again but are we sure it's Chloe and not Lionel Luthor's doing? ”

It’s all Chloe’s doing; she’s annoyed that Lionel’s upset her, and she’s not been able to punish Clark for a month, so she’s making up for lost time. And gettin’ sloppy while she’s at it. :-/

“Keep up the wonderful work on this fic :) ”

Will do. Hope to update again later this week, fingers crossed! :-)

Honest to god Dee this is the only story in my inbox that I get excited about an update but dread having to read.

I like that Clark went to Lex for help regarding Gabe's job.

Please tell me Chloe is not using the green-k on Clark anywhere in the vicinity of Lionel Luthor...

"Honest to god Dee this is the only story in my inbox that I get excited about an update but dread having to read."

The same is true from this end, babes. I hate writing it, but somehow it flows the fastest from my fingers!

"Please tell me Chloe is not using the green-k on Clark anywhere in the vicinity of Lionel Luthor..."

Well...you'll see how that all unfolds. ;-)

Thanks for commenting, babes! Much appreciated. *hugs*
