Another Clex update! :-)
Typical. You wait three whole months for a single update, and then two come along at once! :-P
I'm having some trouble editing previous entries; the formatting all disappears and everything's left looking like one big, ugly sentence, so I can't go back and put the chapter links in. Apologies for any inconvenience! Hopefully they'll soon fix it.
Enjoy.

Chapter 7
“Zod?” Clark echoed. “We defeated him already, Lex. Don’t you remember?”
“Not this Zod,” Lex replied, slipping into a robe and tying the sash. “This is a variant of the original General Zod that you got rid of a few years back.”
“What do you mean, ‘variant’?” Clark asked with a frown.
“Your father, Jor-El, created a failsafe of Krypton when he realised the planet was on the verge of destruction,” he explained. “He made clones of prominent Kryptonians and preserved their DNA in a miniaturised ‘colony’ of sorts, namely the Bottle City of Kandor. One of the genies in that bottle happens to be our old buddy Zod – at this point in time, merely a humble Major.”
“Why would my father clone Zod?” he asked, perplexed. “He was his sworn enemy, he hated him.”
“Not always,” Lex said softly. “Turns out they started out as best friends.” He gave a sad smile. “Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?”
Clark lowered his gaze and tried to concentrate on the issue at hand. “You say they’re in a bottle, so as long as they don’t get out-”
“Too late. My stupid sister’s already rubbed the lamp and let them out.”
“Your sister?”
“Tess.”
Clark’s jaw dropped. “Tess is your sister?”
“Half-sister. My Dad wasn’t the most faithful husband in the world, and he had a dalliance with my childhood nurse that resulted in the birth of Lutessa Lena Luthor, aka Tess Mercer. A fascinating story to be sure, but one for another day.”
Clark nodded. “There’s just one thing I don’t understand,” he said evenly. “All this information on Zod, and Kandor – where did you get it? How do you know all of this when even I don’t?”
Lex smiled. “You forget that Zod and I were one and the same not too long ago, when he inhabited my body.”
Clark nodded in understanding. “That’s right, I almost forgot.”
“Well, when he checked out, he left a significant piece of luggage behind…” Lex pointed to his head. “His entire mind.”
Clark swallowed. “You mean…?”
“I have access to his every memory, Clark,” he said, triumph glittering in his steel-grey eyes. “Which means I know what his plans are. And believe me, they’re not pretty.”
Clark sat down beside Lex and sighed. “Wow. That’s…handy.”
“You have no idea. I know everything Zod wants to do, and how he plans to do it - and if he gets his way, humanity doesn’t stand a chance.”
Clark let out a breath. “That bad?”
Lex raised a sardonic brow. “This is the guy who was instrumental in the destruction of your home planet, Clark. Now he wants to do it to this one.”
Clark clenched his fist in anger. “We can’t let that happen,” he said tightly.
“I agree. Now do you see why I kept tabs on all the meteor-infected people?”
Clark nodded slowly. “They’re best-equipped to protect the world from harm if it comes down to that.”
Lex nodded. “Exactly. I’m all for civil liberties Clark, but I did what I had to do. The world is at stake.”
Clark nodded again and linked his fingers together, deep in thought. “So what’s Zod’s big plan?”
“What Major Zod wants to do with humanity is what I’ve feared all along, Clark,” he said, walking across the room and looking out the window. “Enslavement on a global scale. They have the technology to turn the sun’s rays red and recreate Krypton on earth.”
“But – but won’t that be detrimental to them, turning the sun’s rays red?” Clark asked. “Kryptonians on earth get their abilities from the yellow sun, not the red one.”
Lex folded his arms. “Rules don’t apply to the bottled clones, Clark; they have a different physiognomy, so the situation is reversed. Under the yellow sun they’re just as human as I am. It’s the red rays that’ll juice their batteries.”
“And they definitely have the technology to do this?”
Lex nodded. “I’m afraid so.”
Damn it. Somehow, it was always the worst specimens from his home planet that made it to earth as ambassadors.
“What can I do, Lex?” he asked, feeling almost helpless.
“Let me help you,” Lex urged, sitting down beside him. “It’s a difficult task, for sure, but not an impossible one. We can stop Zod, but we need to work together.”
Clark rested his chin on his hand thought long and hard.
“I want to see all the meteor-infected people you have in hiding,” he finally declared.
Lex nodded and got to his feet and stretched. “Of course. I’ll get the plane readied right away. Maybe then you’ll stop calling me a monster, and we can finally work together to save the world from destruction, like we should have been doing all along.”
Despite the seriousness of the situation Clark chuckled at the subtle jab; but then a frown creased his brow as he was faced with a new worry.
“I’ll have to take you to the Team, let them know what’s going on,” he murmured.
Lex nodded. “It’s inevitable.”
“Not all of them will welcome you back with open arms, Lex,” he warned. “Oliver in particular won’t be very pleased to see you.”
Lex barely held back a snort. “Yeah? Well, that’s feeling’s mutual,” he retorted. “And he’s in no position to talk. From what I hear, that bastard pretty much shot me point-blank in the head from behind and, when that failed, blew my ass to kingdom come for something my father did to him. Luckily for me, they were clones, but if anyone’s got a right to be pissed, it’s me.”
Lex did have a valid point.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Clark said as he rose. “Okay, as soon as you’re out of the shower, we can make that quick trip to Montana. Once I’m satisfied all the ‘missing’ people are alive and well, then I’ll take you back to the Team and you can brief everyone what’s going on.”
“I can’t wait to see the looks on their faces when I walk into that room,” Lex said smugly as he headed for the bathroom. “But I’ll try to refrain from making any inappropriate or childish remarks.”
***
The flight to Montana was quick. Clark’s eyes widened as the plane touched down and he and Lex were led towards what appeared to be a fully-stocked, state-of-the-art facility. He was even more surprised to see every single meteor freak alive and well, and – dare he say it – happy and thriving under the watchful eye of Gina, one of Lex’s most trusted allies – another one he could have sworn had been killed.
“Several of them have worked on developing their abilities, so they able to do exponentially more than what they could when they were brought here,” Lex explained as they watched Daniel Kim carefully lift the newly-landed jet just a few inches in the air and swing it in a controlled 180-degree turn, ready for take off – with just a simple gaze.
“I’m sorry I misjudged you, Lex,” Clark said, feeling guilty.
Lex shrugged. “It’s not your fault, Clark. My methods are extreme, I admit; but you have to believe that I only have the survival of mankind at heart.”
Clark nodded. “I believe you.”
They had a quick tour of the facilities, and then jumped back on the plane and headed straight back to Metropolis. Clark sent Chloe a message instructing her to get the Team together for an important meeting that included Lex.
Don’t you mean ‘involves’ Lex? she texted back.
He dialled her number. “Lex is with me. I’ll explain everything when I get there,” he said as soon as she picked up.
“Wait a minute: Lex is with you?” she echoed.
“Yes, he is, and he’s got some very important information for all of us. I’m asking you to trust me on this, Chloe.”
“Wow,” she breathed. “Okay, I’ll get everyone ready. But Ollie’s gonna go totally ballistic as soon as he hears this.”
“After practically killing Lex twice for something he didn’t even do, I’d say he doesn’t have a high horse to stand on,” Clark shot back. “Do you?”
“Touché,” she admitted. “Fine. I’ll do what I can to pour oil over those troubled waters before you get here.”
“Thanks. See you in a couple of hours.”
