Chapter 6

Clark and Chloe turned to each other several times in the night, making love in every way imaginable.  The intimate bond they’d shared and almost lost was quickly re-established as passion and warmth bloomed between them.  Eventually they both dozed off, a mass of tired but happy, intertwined limbs.

It was late morning by the time Clark stirred.  The buzzing urgency within him that typically accompanied a RedK bender was long gone, and he was back to feeling like his normal self.

Chloe was probably going to scold him like a schoolteacher for spraying her with RedK and tying her up, but he felt he had a solid defence in that the results of his actions were well worth the risk taken.  Things were back to normal between them, and he couldn’t be happier than he was now.

A smile lifted the corners of his mouth as he contemplated how he and Chloe would spend the rest of their time here on the tropical island.  Maybe they’d go boating, or scuba diving, or take a tour of Bridgetown…or maybe they’d spend the entire time holed up in their room, catching up on some kinky, fruity/chocolaty sex.  He certainly didn’t object to that, and he had a feeling she wouldn’t, either.  His smile widened as he yawned and stretched, automatically reaching for the woman by his side.

His hand encountered empty space.  He patted the spot a few times before it registered in his foggy brain that Chloe was no longer beside him.  Frowning, he sat up and rubbed his eyes, then cracked one open. A quick look around the room told him that Chloe was nowhere to be seen.

He squinted and looked through the bathroom door, expecting her to be in the shower, but there was no sign of her.  He also noticed that her clothes, which had been on the chaise lounge, were gone.

A sick feeling settled in his gut and he closed his eyes as if to shut out the truth of the situation.  Disappointment flooded him and left him hollow as he realised there was only one place she could possibly be.

Across the road in the courthouse.

His heart beat fiercely within him, so much so that his chest began to physically hurt.  After everything they’d shared, after all the promises made…she still couldn’t let this one go.  Clark felt as though his whole life was collapsing around him, and he was powerless to stop it.

He sat with his head in his hands and closed his eyes, grinding his jaw as a single tear rolled down his cheek.

He must have sat there in bed for about ten minutes when he heard the door open and close and her footsteps padded lightly on the plush carpet.

“Hey there, Stud Muffin,” she greeted airily as she walked towards him.  “You’ll never guess where I’ve been.”

“How could you?” he whispered, without lifting his head.

She stopped and stood still.  “How could I…what?” she asked, baffled.

His fists clenched with fury.  She had the gall to act like it was nothing serious?

“After everything you said yesterday, after everything we did,” he said in quietly.  “You went over the road, didn’t you?”

“Well…yeah, but -”

“You just couldn’t stay away,” he muttered darkly.  “I should have known.  Damn it, how could I have been so stupid?”

“Hey, no need to blow a gasket!  You were sleeping, so I didn’t think you’d mind if I took a quick -”

“I don’t know what to do anymore, Chloe,” he said flatly.  “If all this couldn’t convince you to slow down, then I don’t know what will.  But you’ve made it pretty clear that I can’t help you.”

Clark, what are you yammering on about?” she asked, sounding perplexed.  “And will you at least do me the honour of looking at me when I’m talking to you?”

He shook his head grimly.  “I can’t look at you right now, Chloe - not after this.”

“What the hell am I supposed to have done, Clark?” she exclaimed.

Anger bubbled within him and he felt his eyes begin to itch and burn.  “Don’t play games with me, Chloe, I know you sat in on the Merloni trial!”

“The Merloni – is that where you think I went?” she said incredulously.

“I’m not stupid, Chloe,” he said in precise, clipped tones. “Though clearly you must think I am if after everything we did yesterday, you still insisted on going over to the courthouse.”

She snorted with laughter.  “Dressed like this?”

The derisive edge in her voice made him curious.  Slowly he lifted his head and let his gaze rest upon her, whereupon he did a double-take.  She held her hands out dramatically and he saw that she was dressed in a fluffy white hotel bathrobe and red flip-flops, and her hair was wet.

Oops.  Definitely not the look he had been expecting.

As if to further prove her point, she untied her belt and opened the robe to reveal a royal blue bikini with gold fasteners underneath.

Whoa.  Wherever she’d spent the morning, it definitely hadn’t been at the courthouse.  He swallowed, mentally serving himself a very large slice of humble pie.

“Uh…I thought you said you went over the road,” he said lamely.

“I did,” she said dryly as she slipped the robe off her shoulders and sat next to him.  “Over the road to the beach, that is.  I can’t remember the last time I went swimming in the sea, and the water looked so inviting from up here that I just couldn’t resist.”  She sighed and linked her arms around his neck.  “It was like swimming in a shimmering, sparkling sapphire.”

“You went swimming?” he said, overjoyed with relief.

She nodded.  “And then I couldn’t resist checking out the day spa, and guess what?  Turns out our suite affords us free sessions every day of our stay here, so I had an avocado facial, used the steam room, and also treated myself to a manicure and pedicure.  See?”  She lifted one foot delicately for him to inspect her crimson-tipped toenails.

He sighed in relief and put his arms around her.  “Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked, stroking her damp hair tenderly.

“You were completely wiped out, as tends to happen after a RedK binge, and I didn’t have the heart to wake you,” she said, ruffling his tousled hair.  “Besides, you look completely adorable when you sleep.”

He smiled and held her close.  “I’m sorry I accused you, Chloe,” he said remorsefully.

“And I’m sorry I ever gave you a reason to doubt me,” she said, her hazel eyes boring into his.  “Thank you for bringing me back from the edge, Clark.  Even if you did have to resort to perilous means to do so.”

“Ah, yes…Temptress,” he said, grimacing.  “I apologise.  I can’t believe I tied you up like that…”

She shushed him and laid her soft fingers over his mouth.  “Hey - no self-recriminations, Clark.  Your plan worked, and that’s all that matters.”

He lifted her hand from his mouth and wrapped his hands around her fingers.  “Are your wrists okay?” he asked, caressing them.  “The bonds weren’t too tight, or…”

“Everything’s fine, really,” she insisted, running her hands down his chest.  “Besides, I…I must confess, I…kinda liked it.”

He grinned at her rapidly reddening face.  “Ooh, Chloe – I’d never have guessed you’d be into bondage,” he smirked.  “If I’d known, I’d have tied you up sooner.”

Her eyes widened and she leaned back and gave him a saucy look.  “Are you saying this is something you’d been considering before you hauled out the redK?”

This time, it was his cheeks that went warm.  “It’s all those darned scarves of yours, giving me naughty thoughts,” he admitted.  “It’s been a long-time fantasy of mine, even before we got together.”

“Well, in that case, you’re welcome to tie me up again, bog boy,” she purred, stretching languidly on the bed and striking a pose.

He pondered for a minute.  “You know, I think I’ll take you up on that,” he finally said.

Chloe watched admiringly as Clark rose to his feet in all his glorious nakedness.  He went over to her carry on case and returned with her yellow scarf, watching her avidly as she lay back against the crimson silk sheets.

Holding the scarf between his teeth, he slid the sleeves of her bathrobe off her arms and made short work of her bikini.  Before long she was as naked as he was, revelling in her boyfriend’s loving touch.

Carefully he trailed the scarf over her smooth skin tickling her face and arms, running it down her legs and back up over her stomach.  He teased her for a while before pulling her to a sitting position in front of him, whereupon he wrapped the scarf around both their wrists, tying her left wrist to his right one.

Chloe looked down at their joined hands and giggled.  “You’ve only gone and tied yourself to me by mistake, you silly lug,” she laughed.

“It’s no mistake,” he said seriously, and her easy smile faded as she noticed the intense expression in his eyes.

Clark?” she queried softly.

He swallowed hard, as if finding his throat suddenly dry.  “I wanted to do this over breakfast, but…well, I guess now’s as good a time as any.”

Her brows drew together in a slight frown.  “Good time for what?”

He linked his fingers with hers and stared down into her hazel eyes with earnest honesty.  “We’ve been best friends for ten years, Chloe – the last five as a couple,” he said, his pulse throbbing in his neck as his heart hammered against his ribs.  “I can honestly say that you’ve brought me more joy, laughter and smiles that I’d ever thought was humanly – or alienly – possible.”

She chuckled at his invented word, but his eyes were serious as he went on.

“Through the many ups and downs we’ve had over the years, one thing remains constant; the way we feel about each other, the way we’re stronger together.  We’ve been able to weather every storm and emerge victorious, hand-in-hand as we are now.”

He paused, and reached behind her with his left hand to unearth something from underneath the pillow.  “I never want to let go of your hand, Chloe Sullivan,” he said earnestly.  “I love you.”

Tears welled up in her eyes as her heart swelled with raw emotion.

“I love you too, Clark.  For all eternity,” she whispered.

He smiled and stroked her cheek with his right hand.  “I know.  And it makes me feel…alive, knowing how much you love me.

“So, in light of our aforementioned mutual feelings,” he went on, “I feel it would be mutually beneficial if we took our relationship to the next level.”

Chloe’s mouth dropped open as he slid off the bed and dropped to one knee in front of her.  Taking a deep breath, he opened his left hand to reveal a princess-cut diamond set in a platinum band.

She gasped, suddenly breathless, and her right hand flew to cover her gaping mouth.  Carefully, Clark took the ring between his thumb and forefinger and offered it up to her.

“Chloe Ann Sullivan,” he said steadily, his breath warm against her inner thigh as he looked into her wide eyes, “…will you marry me?”

Chloe’s eyes drifted shut, and she was silent for several seconds even though she was sure he could hear her heart beating rapidly.

Eventually she opened her eyes and spoke softly.

“You’re naked; I’m naked; we’re tied together…and you’re kneeling between my legs, asking me to marry you…correct?” she questioned observantly.

He glanced around and nodded.  “That’s about right, yep.”

“Oh Clark,” she breathed, running the fingers of her free hand through his hair.  “You really don’t fight fair, do you?”

He shook his head with a warm smile.  “Nope.”

Tears filled her eyes and she wrapped her hands around his.  “Now, how could I possibly be expected to say ‘no’ to that?”

“I was banking on the probability that you wouldn’t,” he confessed, clasping her hands tightly.  “And your answer is…?”

Chloe slid to her knees so that they were both kneeling in front of each other.  “Nothing would give me greater joy and honour that being your wife, Clark,” she declared resolutely.  “My answer is yes: I will marry you.”

She’s never seen Clark smile as radiantly as he did now.  His eyes shone as he slipped the ring onto her newly manicured finger, the cool metal warming instantly against her skin.

He lifted her fingertips and pressed his lips to them.  “I’m going to make you the happiest woman in the world, Chloe,” he declared.

She lowered their joined hands and kissed his fingers in return.  “I already am, Clark,” she whispered happily.  “I already am.”

They finally got around to ordering breakfast up to their suite.  Clark settled Chloe on his lap and as they had their meal they chatted about their future.

“I hope you realise what you’re getting into,” he warned as he balanced a leftover cornflake on her nose.  “It’s not gonna be easy being married to me, what with my hero duties and work at the Planet…”

“Hey,” she admonished, “have you met me, Clark?  When have you ever known me to take the smooth and easy road?”

The cornflake fell off her face and landed between her naked breasts.  Clark leaned forward and gladly helped retrieve it with his mouth.

“Since…well, never,” he admitted, munching on the crispy flake.  “But this time it’ll be different, Chloe.  We’ll actually be married.  With a certificate and everything.”

She snorted.  “Dude, I’ve stuck with you for the last ten years,” she pointed out cleverly.  “We’re pretty much already married.  Why would I freak and wimp out on you just because you put a ring on it?”

He thought on her words.  “You know, you do make an excellent point,” he answered at last.

“Of course I do,” she said smugly, trailing her fingers down his abdomen.  “And speaking of excellent points…”

Her small hand wrapped around his hardness and she stroked her thumb over the sensitive tip.  He twitched against her and barely managed to stifle a moan.

She grinned up at him.  “How about you thrill me with your ‘excellent point’, my lover?”

He smiled widely and glanced at the remnants of their breakfast.  “Are we done here?”

“I don’t know about you, but I’ve developed an appetite of an entirely different nature,” she giggled, holding onto his neck as he rose to his feet and carried her across the suite.

He lowered her gently onto the bed and settled himself over her, nudging against her with his broad length.

“Will you look at that,” he said in mock surprise.  “So have I, apparently.”

“So what are you waiting for?” she teased, sliding her thigh against his.  “Satisfy me, Clark.  Fill me up, good and proper.”

He rested his forehead against hers and smiled.  “Believe me when I say that nothing will give me greater pleasure,” he whispered, as he linked his hands in hers and fulfilled her every wish.
