Part 2
It wasn’t possible.
Chloe sat on the ground in stunned disbelief, staring into nothingness.
She couldn’t believe it. She didn’t want to believe it. Oliver couldn’t be gone, not just like that.
But the aftershocks in the ground and the static in her ear told the grim story she was forced to acknowledge.
Oliver was dead.
Her shoulders began to tremble violently, and she pressed her hand to her mouth in shock.
“Chloe?” Dinah said, shaking her shoulder gently. “Chloe, are you alright?”
“He’s gone,” she said in a daze. “He’s gone…”
“No, he’s not.”
“You saw what happened, Dinah,” she said hollowly. “He’s gone, and I didn’t even get to say goodbye. I never told him…it all happened so fast…”
“Chloe, it’s okay,” Dinah said comfortingly. “Everything’s gonna be fine—”
“Fine?” Chloe cried. “How will it ever be fine? He’s dead, Dinah!”
“No, he—”
“He’s gone, and I never told him—” her eyes filled with tears, and she squeezed them shut, her heart breaking in agony. “I should have told him.”
“Chloe, he’s right—”
“I should have told him!”
“Told me what?”
She opened her mouth to respond and froze. That voice…
Slowly she turned around, not daring to believe, too afraid to hope. But there he was. Sandwiched between Clark and Bart and looking a little worse for wear…but he was here. Alive. And thankfully, all in one piece.
“Oliver! You’re—” she took a few shaky steps towards him and cradled his face in her hands. “My God, you’re alive!”
He frowned. “’Course I’m alive. Why wouldn’t I be?”
“But the explosion—” she swallowed and took a deep breath. “I thought you were…”
“As soon as the guys heard the distress signal, they took off,” Victor explained. “We tried to tell you, but you were so focused on the monitors that you didn’t even turn around, so you never even noticed they’d left.”
She stared from Clark to Bart, and Bart gave her a cheeky wink.
“I got there first,” he boasted.
She swallowed nervously. “And the device?”
“I hurled it into the ocean; it detonated underwater,” Clark replied. “The mission was a success.”
She frowned and studied Oliver with an assessing gaze. He didn’t seem hurt, thank goodness…
Clark simply smiled. “You know I’d never let anything happen to him.”
“Yeah, well tell that to my head,” Oliver said, scowling. “Do you have any idea how it feels to be whacked in the head by you and Bart in full speed at the same time? It’s like being tag-teamed by two freight trains, for crying out loud!”
He gingerly pressed a hand to his temple and grimaced. “Ow. I’m gonna need a painkiller the size of a hockey puck if I’m ever going to feel normal—”
“I love you.”

A hushed silence descended upon the room, broken only by the beeps of the monitors.
Then Chloe spoke again.
“I love you,” she repeated, staring into his brown eyes. “I love you, Oliver.”
“Wait a minute, wait a minute — she loves him?” Bart said, scandalised. “Since when?”
Chloe ignored him, focusing instead on the joyous disbelief flaring in Oliver’s eyes.
“Say it again,” he finally whispered.
She smiled. “I love you,” she said solemnly. “I should have told you months ago, before we officially started dating, even…but I was so scared I was gonna lose you.
“But I’m not scared anymore. After what nearly happened to you today…” she shuddered. “If anything ever happens to you, I want you know exactly how I feel about you. I love you.”
“What the—?! They’ve been dating?” Bart moaned. “Since when?”
“Shh — trying to listen here!” Dinah chided.
He turned to her and scowled. “Did you know about this?” he challenged.
She shrugged. “I thought we’d all figured it out by now.”
“Well, clearly not all of us!”
The bickering continued, but as far as Chloe was concerned the room was empty of everyone but the man before her. She stared at Oliver intently and he gazed back at her with eyes that were suspiciously bright as he stroked her hair with an unsteady hand.
“Forgive me,” he said hoarsely, “…but I’ve waited so long for this moment, and now that it’s here…” His face broke into a broad smile. “Could you say it again, please?”
“What, you didn’t hear her the first five times?” Bart grumbled.
“Boy, will you shut up?” Dinah warned. “If you don’t, I swear I will make your ears bleed!”
“I love you,” Chloe whispered with a smile. “And now that it’s out, I just can’t seem to stop saying it.”
Oliver grinned. “I don’t have a problem with that, believe me.”
“I’ve loved you for months, Ollie, you know I have,” she said, staring into his eyes. “I’m just finally found the courage to say it out loud.”
“Yeah, I know.” He stroked her cheek tenderly and smiled, then turned and finally acknowledged everyone else in the room. “For the record, you all heard her, right?”
“How could we not?” Bart griped.
Dinah gave Bart a filthy look, and Victor and AC just chuckled.
Clark nodded. “Yeah, we did.”
“Good.” Oliver reached for his belt. “Because I want to do this while we have witnesses.”
There was another hushed silence as everyone stared at him in horror.
“Oliver, what the hell?!” Bart yelled. “Just get a room, man! No-one wants to see that!”
Oliver ignored him and brought out a small velvet box from his utility belt. Before Chloe’s mind could even begin to compute why he would have such an item on his person, he slowly descended to one knee before her.
“Chloe Anne Sullivan: I love you with all my heart,” he declared. “Will you do me the honour of becoming my wife?”
