Chapter 42

Oliver had been right.  Clark had confronted Tess a few days later, and she’d confirmed that the Phantom Zone crystal had indeed been destroyed.

“She said I had to face Davis like a man, and that killing him was my destiny,” Clark said, disgusted.  “If she knew me at all, she would never have done that.  I don’t kill!”

“You don’t kill humans,” Oliver corrected.  “Davis Bloome is not human.”

“But he’s trying so hard not to be a monster.”

“You’re making the mistake of measuring him by your own yardstick, Clark,” Oliver reasoned.  “You think because you tried so hard to blend in and be human that Davis is the same?”

“Isn’t he?” Clark shot back.  “He didn’t even know about Krypton or any of this until a few months ago!”

“May be not, but Davis didn’t have Jonathan and Martha Kent to show him what it was like to be human,” Oliver pointed out.

“Yet somehow he managed to end up in a profession where he saves people’s lives,” Clark countered.  “That’s sounds pretty human to me.”

“Yeah, it was,” Oliver agreed.  “Right up until the point where he started killing people to curb his murderous appetites.”

Clark folded his arms and scowled.  “I still think it’s worth at least trying to save him.”

“And you’re willing to gamble both Chloe’s life and the fate of humanity on a camouflage?” Oliver challenged, and shook his head.  “I don’t think you’re quite grasping the gravity of the situation, Clark.  It’s kill or be killed time, so if you’re not prepared to kill him, then you’d better be prepared to die.”

Clark glared at him and then disappeared in a huffy whoosh.  Oliver sighed deeply and went back to scanning the globe for Chloe.

“I know where she is,” a voice whispered behind him.  Oliver turned and saw Victor, who’d been using the computers in a different room, leaning weakly on the door-frame looking greyer than a ghost.

“Victor!” he exclaimed, and hurried across to prop him up.  “My God, what happened to you?”

“I know where Chloe is,” he repeated as Oliver guided him to the couch..  “There’s a small motel on the outskirts of Metropolis; they’re registered there under false names.”

“Let me have the details, I’ll get over there right away.”  He turned to go, but tilted his head and examined his friend, worried to see that he was pale and shaking from head to toe.

“How did you find this out?” Oliver asked, narrowing his eyes.

Victor smiled weakly.  “I analysed one of the swabs Hamilton used on your neck after the attack.  Found alien DNA, tracked it…” he held out his arms.  “Voila.”

“Chist, Victor, that could have killed you!” he yelled.  “You remember what happened last time?”

“If we don’t stop this beast, we’re all dead anyway,” he replied with a listless shrug.  “Besides, the anti-virals y’all loaded me up with after the last assault held up against the foreign DNA, so it’s all good.”

“That’s a relief,” Oliver said as he went to the armoury.  “Still, I can’t take you out on this recovery mission, not in that state.  You rested up here while the rest of us deal with Davis.  You can still run coms and keep us posted in case the tagret starts to move.”

“Works for me,” Victor replied as he made himself comfortable.

Oliver handed him a communicator.  “Alright.  Hey…” he swallowed.  “Thanks, man.  That was a really brave thing you did.”

Victor grinned.  “You’re welcome.”

***

He assembled the team on the Kent Farm within an hour.

Victor remained at the Clocktower as agreed, and Arthur was busy dealing with a water-related natural disaster on the other side of the world; so it was just himself, Clark, Dinah and Bart.

“Good news, everyone: Victor’s been able to determine Chloe’s exact location,” Oliver said to the group.  “Now, we need to think of a plan that can get Chloe out safely and get rid of the beast at the same time.”

“I’ve got one,” Clark piped up.

Oliver folded his arms.  “Let’s hear it.”

Clark gestured to Bart, who handed him a thick sheaf of papers.  He unfolded them on the table and spread them out, and everyone pored over it.

“These are blueprints of a LuthorCorp geothermal facility,” Clark said.

“I know it,” Oliver said dryly.  “And this helps us how?”

“I’m going to bury Doomsday there,” Clark announced.  “When Rokk came from the future, he told me there was nothing on the surface of the earth that could defeat him; so I’ve decided to put him under it.”

Oliver pinched his brow and sighed, wishing he could shake Clark until his teeth rattled.

“Yeah, I don’t think your buddy from the future meant that to be a riddle, Clark,” he replied wearily.  “Bullshit loopholes are not gonna work in this case.”

Clark scowled at him and pointed to a dark spot on the blueprints.  “This marker here represents a mile-deep tunnel into the earth’s crust.  If we can lure Doomsday down there, he’ll no longer be a problem.”

“I admire your optimism, Clark,” Oliver cut in impatiently.  “But you seem to be forgetting the fact that he’s clawed his way out a grave before.  A hole in the ground isn’t going to stop him, whether it’s six feet deep or six hundred.  The best it’ll do is slow him down, but not for long.”

Clark straightened and folded his own arms mutinously.  “I suppose you’ve got a better plan?” he challenged.

“I’m just saying that this one is doomed to fail, pardon the pun,” he replied.

“It’s true, Clark,” Dinah added.  “We already know that burying Davis alive won’t work.”

“But I won’t be burying Davis; I’ll be burying Doomsday.”

Bart frowned and looked from Clark to Oliver, then back to Clark again.  “I don’t follow.”

Clark walked over to his desk and picked up a box, which he handed to Bart.

“Careful; it’s got black kryptonite in it,” he said.  “Keep it closed until we get to the facility.”

Bart opened it a crack, then closed it as Clark backed away fearfully.  “What does it do?” he asked.

“If we use it on Davis, it’ll separate his human side from his Kryptonian side,” he replied.  He turned to Dinah.  “You go with Bart; check the location, make sure there’s nobody onsite.  I don’t want there to be any collateral damage.”

Bart grinned and swept a startled Dinah into his arms.

“Hey!” she screeched.  “What are you—?”

They disappeared in a cloud of dust.  As soon as they were gone, Oliver turned to Clark and clapped slowly in mock applause.

“Splitting him in half,” he said sarcastically.  “That’s your grand plan?”

Clark clenched his fists.  “What is your problem?”

“My problem, Clark, is that you’re still talking out of your ass,” he said, his hand tightening on his crossbow.  “Davis is Doomsday.  There is no human side to separate.”

“I saw all the good he did before the monster took him over,” Clark argued.  “I know how much he’s fighting against being a bad person.  I’m not going to kill him in cold blood.”

“And assuming this ‘separation’ stone even works, how do you know you won’t have just unleashed an unstoppable killing machine?” Oliver countered.

“I don’t,” Clark replied shortly.  “But it’s our only option.”

“Well, I’m not prepared to gamble humanity on your so-called only option,” he replied tersely.  “Here’s an option: kill Davis before he has a chance to beast out.”

“We can’t just kill an innocent human being!” Clark cried.

“He’s neither innocent, nor human, Clark - get with the program.”

“And I suppose that’s your justification for killing Lex, was it?” Clark said coolly.

Oliver’s lips tightened.  “I’m not going to stand here arguing about my reasons for taking out Lex; not when Chloe’s life is at stake,” he ground out.  “Like it or not, Clark, we need to take care of Davis.  Permanently.”  He walked past Clark and headed towards the door.

“It doesn’t have to be by murdering him!” Clark insisted.

Oliver growled, and his last remaining thread of patience snapped.

“I’ve had enough of this shit.”  With the speed and agility of a cat, Oliver raised his crossbow and fired it.  A glowing, green-tipped dart sailed through the air and thudded squarely into Clark’s right shoulder blade.

***

He really hadn’t wanted it to come to this.  But he knew Clark well, so he’d come prepared.  Despite his earlier promise to take care of Doomsday properly, Oliver knew that when push actually came to shove, Clark would either kick against it or start waffling so that someone else would have to step in and do it; which wouldn’t be so bad if he didn’t then proceed to point fingers at everyone and play the blame game.

Well, Oliver for one wasn’t going to stand for it; not this time.

He watched with hard eyes as Clark fell to the ground and rolled over, embedding the kryptonite-tipped dart firmly in his shoulder.  Clark screamed in agony and gritted his teeth as Oliver stood over him and spoke.

“It’s not gonna kill you, Clark,” he said matter-of-factly.  “Just get your ego out of the way while we do what needs to be done.”

“Don’t do this,” Clark moaned, writhing in agony.  “Please…don’t kill Davis…”

Oliver bent over him and shook his head.  “It’s either him or humanity,” he replied.  “And I choose to save humanity.”  And Chloe, he added silently.  He hooked his crossbow back on his hip and straightened.

Clark looked imploringly up at him.  “Please…”

“I’m sorry, Clark.”

Oliver turned walked out of the barn, not stopping until he got to his car.  Once inside, he fired up the vehicle and zoomed off down the road at top speed.

I really loved Victor in this chapter, what he'd done for Chloe was brave, he's a great friend.
I can't wait to know what's going to happen. Is Jimmy going to die?
I'm looking forward to read the next chapters.

I'll always have a soft spot for Clark, but you know he can be a little irritating sometimes. :-P

As for the twins...well, Iceman I love. Jimmy, not so much. But I adore Aaron & Shawn Ashmore, if that makes sense!
