Finally, the light at the end of the tunnel! :-)

Hope the last chapter didn’t depress you too much.  Sorry for the doom & gloom of it, but it had to be done - and don’t worry, it has a happy ending. ;-)  I can also say that writing a resolution to this godawful scene has, in some small way, helped wash out the bitter taste that Requiem left in my mouth.  I hope it does the same for you, too.

I hope you all enjoyed reading it.  Thanks to every single one of you for your awesome comments - they kept me going every step of the way! *group-cuddles* :-)

Written for the lovely [livejournal.com profile] sweet_jesus1 who won it in auction a while ago, and has been so patient with me.  [PS: I promised you 5,000 words, and I gleefully exceeded the target.  I hope you like it!  :-)]

Brilliant banner by [livejournal.com profile] sanaazzy.  Many thanks for the use of your wonderful work! *cuddles*

Chapter 5

Tears fell from Chloe’s eyes at Oliver’s pleading words.  Slowly she lifted her hand and rested her palm on his damp cheek.

“What I understand,” she whispered, “is that you made a terrible mistake which you’ve since taken responsibility for.  You were wrong, yes, but you’ve accepted it, and moved on and now you’re making the best possible use of your life as you can.  That’s all any of us can really do.  God knows I’ve made my own share of mistakes; we all have.”

He snorted.  “Clark hasn’t.”

“Oh, he has,” she said grimly, remembering how Clark’s decision to play God had led to his father Jonathan’s death and changed his life forever.  “He definitely has, but he’s learned from them.  And so have you.”

She cupped his face with her other hand and stared into his sad eyes.  “The person whose life you thought you took isn’t any the worse for wear because of your interference,” she said.  “You’re not a cold blooded killer.”

“But what I did—”

“Was a long time ago,” she finished.  “You’re not the same person you were back then, and neither am I.  We live, and we learn.  Let it go, Ollie.”

“So…you forgive me?” he asked hesitantly.

She smiled.  “I didn’t realise I was meant to be holding a grudge.”

“Oh, Chloe,” he breathed, and pulled her into his arms.  She wrapped hers around him and held him tight; only then did she feel the trembling in his frame and realise just how much it had cost him to come clean about this.

“There were so many times I wanted to apologise to you,” he mumbled.  “I really did, but I never brought it up because I hoped you’d forgotten, and…well, I honestly didn’t expect you to forgive me.”

She smiled.  “You thought wrong.”

“God, I thought nothing would be more painful than talking about me and Lois,” he said with a shudder.  “I was wrong.”

Chloe giggled, and Oliver leaned back and cradled her face with both hands.

“I love you, Chloe.”

She grinned.  “Ditto.”

He made a wry face.  “It’ll do.”

She smiled as he lowered her to the bed and pressed soft kisses to her neck.  His hands were also busy, shifting the sheet from her body to expose her breasts.

“So, are we finally done with the Q&A?” he asked, staring hungrily at her nipples.

She smiled sheepishly.  “Er…almost…?”

“Chloe, please!!!” he begged.

“It’s the last one, I swear!” she said.  “Girl Scout’s honour - again.”

He sighed.  “Go on, then.”

“Is there a Phase Four?” she asked.

He gave her a guarded stare, but nodded.  “Yes, there is.”

“Can I ask what it is?”

“That’s two questions, missy.”

Damn it, I’d hoped you wouldn’t notice.”  She looked up at him and blinked prettily.  “Can you at least give me a hint?”

He shook his head.  “Nope.”

“Why not?” she pouted.

He squinted at her for a second, and then grinned.  “Tell you what: you’ll get the answer to Phase Four when you tell me that you love me.”

She gasped.  “Oh, you are cruel.”

“Hey, if I have to wait for your three words, then you’ll have to wait for mine.”

Her eyes lit up with curiosity.  “So Phase Four is three words?”

“I never said that,” he hedged.  “Now shut up so I can kiss you.”  His lips claimed hers in a deep, searing kiss, and by the time he lifted his head her her limbs were suffused in pleasure.

“Is there a Phase Five?” she asked, and he rolled his eyes.

“Give it up, Chloe.  You promised Phase Four would be your last question, and there’s no point chasing down Phase Five without Phase Four.”

“But I need to know!” she whined.

“Well, you know what to do to get the answers,” he smirked.

“Ah!  You said answers, not answer!” she said triumphantly.  “So there is a Phase Five, then?”

He sighed.  “I don’t know yet.  We’ll see. Now no more questions.”

“Room for one more?” she said timidly.  Oliver growled and mock-strangled her, but he nodded.

“How many more hours of your driving ban do we have left?” she asked.

Oliver glanced at the clock on the wall.  “About ten,” he said with a regretful sigh.  “Then it’s back to reality.”

Chloe grinned and climbed over him.  “Then let’s make those last ten hours count in the best possible way,” she whispered, and claimed his lips with hers.

The End.

The sequel, as you know, is Over The Linesies.

Coming soon: a cute little story curiously titled Say The Wordsies.  *hint-hint* ;-)
